High School Assistant Principal
The High School Assistant Principal assists the Building Principal in providing instructional leadership, managerial oversight, and operational support to ensure high levels of student achievement and a positive school climate that fosters the educational development of every student. The Assistant Principal serves as a collaborative leader focused on continuous school improvement, effective instructional practices, and the development of staff through coaching, feedback, and professional learning aligned to district priorities and the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) instructional framework.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW
Saydel Community School District serves approximately 1,300 students in Saylor and Delaware Townships, located between Ankeny and Des Moines, with three school campuses. Saydel CSD offers big-city opportunities with a small-town commitment to students, staff, and families. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Instructional Leadership
Assists the principal in duties related to instruction, supervision, evaluation, and the overall administration of the school
Provides strong instructional leadership focused on improving teaching and learning outcomes for all students
Demonstrates knowledge and implementation of the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) instructional framework/model, including teacher support, coaching, feedback, and evaluation practices
Supports the implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies and continuous school improvement initiatives
Supervises and evaluates certified and classified staff as assigned by the principal
Develops and supports professional learning opportunities to improve staff effectiveness and student achievement
Collaborates with teachers, Master Teachers, and leadership teams to analyze student achievement data and improve instructional practices
Promotes the effective integration of technology into instructional practices
Actively participates and contributes to building instructional leadership teams and district administrative committees
Develops and maintains effective MTSS systems and structures for academic, attendance, and behavior areas.
School Operations and Administration
Serves as building administrator in the absence of the principal
Assists the principal in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services
Assists with the development of the academic master schedule
Performs record-keeping and reporting functions as directed by the principal
Assists with the coordination and supervision of special programs funded by state and federal sources
Assists with planning and supervision of activities that promote student and staff health and safety, including safety drills and inspections
Represents the building principal at district and community meetings as assigned
Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent
Student Support and School Climate
Assumes primary responsibility for supporting student behavior and maintaining high standards of student conduct
Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance
Assists in the supervision of students before, during, and after school activities and during extracurricular events
Coordinates and supports building Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
Coordinates student advisory actions and interventions
Supports building-wide Social, Emotional, Behavioral, and Mental Health (SEBMH) initiative RULER
Coordinates and promotes participation in student leadership groups and organizations
Supports equitable practices that foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for all students
Assumes responsibility for identifying and supporting at-risk students in collaboration with the school counselor and district social workers.
Staff and Community Relations
Assists the principal with recruitment, selection, onboarding, support, and retention of staff
Facilitates strong partnerships among families, community stakeholders, and the school district
Demonstrates strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills with students, staff, families, and community members
Supports a culture of collaboration, innovation, inquiry, and continuous improvement
QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills that promote high expectations for teaching and student achievement
Strong knowledge of instructional leadership practices and adult learning
Knowledge and experience with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) framework/model preferred
Knowledge and practice in systems thinking, school improvement, collaborative structures, and data-driven decision making
Knowledge and practice in special programs, including special education, talented and gifted education, English language learning, advanced placement, and at-risk programming
Strong understanding of school structures and supports for students experiencing poverty and other barriers to learning
Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusive practices within the school community
Excellent oral and written communication skills
High level of technology literacy
Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and function effectively as a collaborative team member
Master's degree in Educational Leadership required
Administrative experience preferred
Successful secondary teaching experience required
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
Direct supervision of certified and classified high school staff as assigned by the principal.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Saydel High School and district facilities/grounds
Frequent evening and weekend responsibilities, including extracurricular activities and community events
Occasional off-site meetings and district functions
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
220-day contract
Salary and benefits established by Board policy and administrative agreement
Performance is evaluated annually pursuant to the district Administrator Performance Evaluation procedures
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Iowa Administrator License required
Evaluator Approval certification required
Valid Mandatory Reporter certification required
Valid Bloodborne Pathogens and Right-to-Know training certifications required
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required
