Job Title: Electrical Project EngineerJob Description
This role focuses on the design and engineering of electrical control systems for crane applications and related equipment. You will design and review schematics, panel layouts, and associated documentation, ensuring compliance with electrical codes and internal standards. The position involves close collaboration with project managers, engineers, and service technicians to meet project deadlines, support testing activities, and resolve technical issues in both shop and field environments.
Responsibilities
Deliver assigned design tasks and project milestones on schedule, meeting deadlines set by project managers and customers.
Read, interpret, design, and mark up electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, interconnect diagrams, and conduit drawings released by engineering.
Design and verify electrical systems for crane models and related equipment based on customer specifications and applicable electrical codes.
Calculate and select appropriate wire sizes, drive sizes, braking resistors, transformers, contactors, and overload protection devices using relevant electrical codes and internal standards.
Apply internal electrical design standards and UL508A requirements when designing panel layouts, including component selection, wiring sizing, routing, and custom enclosure sizing.
Design and review control panels and layouts to ensure safe, reliable, and maintainable operation in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate system performance and compliance with specifications.
Troubleshoot and resolve electrical design and control issues during FAT, SAT, and in the field by working closely with other engineers and service technicians.
Use AutoCAD Electrical or similar tools to create and update electrical drawings, schematics, and documentation.
Program, configure, or support configuration of PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs, including ladder logic and related control strategies, as required for project needs.
Collaborate with controls engineering teams to integrate Siemens and Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLC and HMI platforms into complete control systems.
Ensure designs are suitable for 480 VAC power systems and comply with applicable electrical safety and design standards.
Select and specify electrical components, including drives, contactors, breakers, and control devices, to meet performance and regulatory requirements.
Support commissioning activities, including on-site startup, tuning, and verification of control systems and equipment.
Manage multiple design projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks and maintaining high-quality output.
Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and customers to clarify requirements, address design questions, and provide technical support.
Document design decisions, calculations, and test results to maintain accurate records and support future maintenance or upgrades.
Essential Skills
Minimum 2 years of panel design experience.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Proficiency in electrical design for industrial control systems, including panel layout and component selection.
Ability to read, understand, and create electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, interconnect, and conduit drawings.
Experience using AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAD tools for electrical design and documentation.
Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles related to 480 VAC power systems and industrial controls.
Ability to calculate wire sizes, drive sizes, braking resistors, transformers, contactors, and overload protection in accordance with electrical codes and internal standards.
Working knowledge of UL508A requirements for industrial control panels, including panel layout, wiring, and enclosure design.
Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs, including configuration and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with Siemens and Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLC and HMI platforms.
Ability to understand and work with ladder logic and related control programming concepts.
Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), including test planning and execution.
Strong troubleshooting skills for resolving electrical and control system issues in both shop and field environments.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple concurrent design projects.
Capability to climb vertical ladders up to 50+ feet as required for site work and inspections.
Effective communication skills for collaborating with project managers, engineers, technicians, and customers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in controls engineering for crane systems or similar industrial equipment.
Exposure to commissioning activities, including on-site startup and validation of control systems.
Familiarity with nuclear and government-regulated projects, including working within strict compliance and documentation frameworks.
Experience selecting and integrating components such as drives, contactors, breakers, and control devices into cohesive panel designs.
Background working with mixed mechanical and electrical engineering teams.
Strong organizational skills to handle a high volume of parallel design tasks.
Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and reliability in all designs.
Work Environment
You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team that includes both mechanical and electrical engineers, with a strong focus on electrical engineering projects. The environment is very fast-paced, and you will often work on multiple designs simultaneously, particularly in highly regulated sectors such as nuclear and government projects. Approximately 20% of your time will involve travel to customer sites for activities such as Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning, and field troubleshooting. The role requires the physical ability to climb vertical ladders up to 50+ feet when accessing equipment or work areas. You will work with modern tools and technologies, including AutoCAD Electrical, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and 480 VAC power systems, in both office and industrial settings. The organization offers strong work stability, supported by a robust pipeline of projects and long-term contracts, creating an environment where engineers can grow their technical expertise and contribute to complex, mission-critical applications.
