Job Title: Electrical Test Engineer
Job Description
The Electrical Test Engineer leads the development, testing, and validation of Powertrain electronic control unit (ECU) hardware and software for automotive applications. This role combines project and team leadership with hands-on engineering, including specification design, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and verification of ECU performance, quality, and reliability. The engineer collaborates closely with technical leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to plan development activities, ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations, and mentor other engineers in best practices for design and testing.
Responsibilities
Break down project concepts and change points into detailed development activities and define the overall ECU development plan with minimal oversight.
Correlate technical project details with key stakeholders and negotiate realistic schedules for deliverables.
Provide clear and timely project status updates to technical leadership as needed.
Design engineering specifications for Powertrain ECU applications, including electrical circuit hardware and software, using tools such as MATLAB Simulink, MS Visio, or other appropriate tools.
Set the direction for creating design concepts and convert them into requirements and functional specifications.
Conduct design reviews with technical leadership to confirm technical feasibility, quality, and alignment with project goals.
Support and mentor other engineers on highly complex design implementations and promote best practices in ECU design and development.
Perform hands-on engineering troubleshooting and root cause analysis on proto@type and mass-production vehicles to identify Powertrain electronics functional issues.
Determine and implement the necessary steps for resolving identified electrical and ECU-related issues.
Plan and execute testing and verification of ECU hardware and software specifications, including electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests and verification of technical change points.
Perform testing in proto@type and mass-production vehicles to validate electrical functional performance, quality, and reliability.
Create clear, comprehensive test result reports and present findings in verification reviews with technical leadership.
Provide oversight, mentoring, and support to other engineers to ensure efficient test planning and proper execution of test activities.
Understand applicable external requirements such as regulations, ISO standards, cybersecurity requirements, and other necessary certifications for the assigned systems.
Ensure that assigned systems conform to relevant external requirements and document compliance as needed.
Provide guidance, mentoring, and leadership to other engineers on system-specific implementations of regulations, ISO standards, cybersecurity requirements, and certifications.
Essential Skills
Strong background in electrical engineering with a focus on hardware testing and electrical testing.
Hands-on experience with ECU testing in automotive environments, particularly for Powertrain applications.
Proficiency in developing and executing test procedures for electrical and ECU systems.
Experience with automotive communication protocols, including CAN protocol.
Ability to perform detailed engineering troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and solution design for Powertrain electronics and ECU systems.
Proficiency with tools used for ECU specification and design, such as MATLAB Simulink and MS Visio, or similar engineering tools.
Demonstrated ability to plan and lead ECU development activities with minimal oversight, including schedule negotiation and stakeholder communication.
Experience creating, reviewing, and managing engineering specifications, requirements, and functional specifications for ECU hardware and software.
Ability to plan and execute EMC and other verification tests in proto@type and mass-production vehicles.
Strong documentation skills, including the ability to prepare clear test reports and present verification results to technical leadership.
Experience mentoring and supporting other engineers in design, test planning, and execution.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working with Powertrain systems in automotive applications.
Familiarity with automotive test tools such as INCA or similar measurement and calibration tools.
Understanding of and experience with ISO standards relevant to automotive electronics and ECU development.
Knowledge of cybersecurity requirements as they apply to automotive ECUs and embedded systems.
Experience ensuring system conformity with regulations and certification requirements for automotive electronics.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions and design reviews with cross-functional teams.
Strong organizational and project coordination skills to manage multiple development and test activities.
Work Environment
The Electrical Test Engineer works in a mixed environment that includes office, laboratory, and vehicle-based settings. The role involves frequent use of engineering tools such as MATLAB Simulink, MS Visio, and automotive test and measurement equipment, including tools used for ECU calibration, data acquisition, and CAN communication analysis. Work includes hands-on testing and troubleshooting in both proto@type and mass-production vehicles, particularly focused on Powertrain ECUs and associated electrical systems. The engineer collaborates closely with technical leadership and other engineers in a professional, team-oriented environment that emphasizes technical excellence, thorough documentation, and continuous mentoring. Standard business hours typically apply, with flexibility as needed to support testing schedules, design reviews, and project deadlines. Appropriate professional or lab-safe attire may be required when working in test labs or around vehicles and equipment.
