Description of Job
Term-Limited Position 2 years
The Assistant Educator supports the planning, delivery, and facilitation of educational programs, in particular the Hands-on History programming at the Ute Indian Museum. This role works closely with the Educator and museum staff to provide engaging, inclusive, and historically accurate learning experiences for diverse audiences, including school groups, families, adults, and community members. The Assistant Educator helps create a welcoming environment that encourages curiosity, dialogue, and respect for multiple perspectives and lived experiences.
Work includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Brief Duty Description / Job Duties:
Assist with the preparation, setup, and breakdown of educational programs, Hands-On History Programs, workshops, tours, and special events.
Support, plan, and facilitate Hands-On History Programs.
Support and facilitate guided tours and learning activities for school groups and public visitors.
Help adapt programs for different age groups, learning styles, and accessibility needs.
Help prepare educational materials, activity guides, and interpretive resources.
Assist with group facilitation and help maintain positive behavior during programs and tours using trauma-informed and inclusive facilitation practices.
Support the incorporation of history, heritage, and cultures of the Ute People, Native American, and Colorado History.
Assist in researching historical topics relevant to Colorado, and the Montrose area, to inform educational programming, learning activities, and exhibits.
Help monitor exhibit spaces during programs to ensure visitor safety and artifact protection.
Assist with attendance tracking, program and event registration management, invoicing through the Point of Sale System, program evaluations, and other basic program documentation.
Help with scheduling, supply inventory, and general organization of education spaces.
Assist with the planning and implementation of events, festivals, living history activities, and exhibit openings.
Support other museum operations as needed, including special events or outreach activities.
Circumstances may require a position to work outside of regular business hours.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Requirements:
Proven Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
Twenty-one (21) months (3,185 hours) of experience in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children over the ages of four (4) years who are not related to the individual;ANDone of the following qualifications:
Completion of six (6) semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university;OR
Completion of forty (40) clock hours of training in coursework applicable to school-age children within the first nine months in the director position.(Note: The 40 clock hours of training cannot include any of the required trainings as listed in rule section 2.508).
OR -
Education:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major area of study in one (1) of the following areas:
Child Development
Psychology
Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Special Education
Elementary Education
Elementary Special Education
Family and Human Development
Family Studies
Special Education
Outdoor Education
Recreation
Human Services
OR -
Education and Experience Alternative:
An Associate's degree or sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited college or university;AND* Three (3) months (455 hours) of experience in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children over the ages of four (4) years who are not related to the individual.
