The Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement office (SLICE) at the University of Colorado, Boulder is seeking applications for an Assistant Director of Service Learning, Leadership, and Social Action! This role is responsible for advancing community engagement, service-learning initiatives, social action programming, and student leadership development within the Division of Student Life at University of Colorado Boulder.
The Assistant Director will develop experiential learning opportunities, supervise student leadership programs, and support community engagement practices rooted in justice, reciprocity, and student-centered learning. The Assistant Director will provide strategic, equity-centered leadership within SLICE including the management of current programs and the development of new service learning initiatives for CU Boulder students.
The position will also manage program operations, supervise professional and student staff, develop strategic campus and community partnerships, and ensure the quality, impact, and sustainability of service-learning and leadership offerings.

The Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement office builds partnerships between the CU Boulder campus community and Boulder. SLICE staff are dedicated to supporting the CU Boulder campus community to explore opportunities and understand sustainable ways in which to affect positive social change through service. They create programming and events for the campus community that encourage lifelong engagement in our communities. The Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement office organizes under a philosophy that believes education and reflection are essential components of service. This philosophy focuses on strengths and reciprocal relationships, commits to diversity and inclusion, and emphasizes the interconnectedness of social and environmental justice issues.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Service Learning Leadership and Development
Provide strategic direction for service-learning programs and ensure alignment with evolving campus and community needs.
Develop community engagement learning outcomes aligned with campus priorities and current research, theory, and standard processes.
Maintain and refine pedagogical approaches to community engagement through ongoing research and understanding the broader campus and community landscape.
Collaborate with assessment staff to design tools and metrics that measure student learning across SLICE programs, initiatives, and experiences.
Create and deliver curricula, workshops, and training on ethical, justice-centered community engagement for student leaders and interested campus partners.
Mentor student leaders to facilitate peer education and support their leadership development.
Design and implement annual and ongoing student leader training programs grounded in modern theories and effective practices.
Build strong relationships with campus units in Student Life and Academic Affairs to expand service-learning initiatives and leadership pathways.
Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports personal development, self-reflection, and student success.
Experiential Learning Program Management and Strategic Partnership
Supervise the Program Manager for Experiential Learning Programs and provide oversight for the Sko Serve alternative breaks program.
Develop and monitor risk-management protocols for domestic and international experiential learning activities.
Collaboratively co-create training for student site leaders and staff/faculty mentors supporting Sko Serve trips.
Manage the Service and Social Action Living Learning Community (LLC), including program design, learning outcomes, and partnership coordination with Residential Life and University Housing.
Supervise LLC peer mentors and co-develop programming, including pre-arrival and weekly engagement.
Instruct regular training and/or courses for student leaders in experiential service learning programs, especially within SLICE and the LLC.
Cultivate reciprocal partnerships with community organizations, government agencies, and campus partners to support meaningful, mutually beneficial engagement opportunities.
Ensure partnerships and programs reflect socially just, ethical community engagement practices.
Implement program improvements informed by assessment, theory, and practice.
Use technology platforms, such as GivePulse and Canvas, to support program operations and student engagement.
Departmental Leadership and Operations
Represent SLICE with professionalism in campus, community, and professional settings while developing and sustaining collaborations.
Provide staff support and coverage as needed and serve as the point of contact in elevated risk situations, ensuring continuity of operations and timely resolution of issues.
Assist the Director of SLICE to envision, conceptualize, and communicate the department's mission.
Work with the Director of SLICE to devise and implement process improvements and align programs to ensure practices inform responsive programming to meet student and partner needs.
Collaborate with SLICE leadership team to develop, implement, and align programming with departmental, Student Life, and institutional strategic priorities.
Actively cultivate and maintain a workplace climate that is supportive of employees and respectful of differences.
Be responsible for program budgets and ensure compliance with all University policies and applicable local, state and federal laws.
Support ongoing evaluations to ensure quality and effectiveness of services and programs.
Complete required reports, data submissions, and budget updates in a timely and accurate manner.
Seek opportunities to share the impact of SLICE initiatives.
Participate in professional development and contribute to institutional committees and professional associations related to service learning, civic engagement, and social action.
Work evening and weekend hours as needed to support student programs.
What You Should Know
Work schedule is typically 8am - 5pm. Student leader and participant meetings, training, and programming may take place in the evening. Between 4-8 SLICE office events a year require staff presence and occur on a Saturday or require late night attendance.
What We Can Offer
The annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000.

What We Require
Master's Degree in education, community engagement, service learning, or related field.
3+ years of professional work experience in an area related to service-learning, such as managing a service-learning program or community engagement educational experience.
1+ year of professional work experience in curriculum development, training, or education initiatives.
What You Will Need
Demonstrated dedication to community engagement and social justice.
Experience and passion for working with undergraduate students.
Exceptional interpersonal relationship-building skills and experience working with a wide range of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, community members, and nonprofit community partners.
Experience communicating with and supporting people from a diverse set of backgrounds.
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Experience and comfort with digital and technology tools, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, project management tools, including social media, data analytics tools, and volunteer management software (GivePulse is a plus).
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced setting.
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Experience in program development that is responsive to local realities and involves responding to a variety of constituents and viewpoints.
