Job Summary:
The behavior analyst intern is a bachelor's level student practitioner of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) who can practice the evaluation, program design, and direct service implementation under the supervision of a fully certified BCBA while they are working on their credential as a part of the fieldwork required to achieve the certification. This intern may be working on a post-bachelor's level certification (Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst, BCaBA) or a master's level certification (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), both of which require prior or concurrent enrollment in BACB approved advanced coursework in behavior analysis, to develop/practice skills, and accumulate supervised fieldwork hours, as prerequisites to sit for the BACB standardized exam. The intern may manage a caseload at the building level of students who have been identified as appropriate for consultation or direct ABA services. The intern will serve as a leader on a building level ABA team and a team member of a school's special education team. The supervising BCBA is ultimately responsible for the results of the work produced by the intern, but the intern is gradually given increased autonomy in completing the work of a behavior analyst at the level appropriate for their intended certification, experience, and competence. The intern may serve in the role of intern typically for 1 or 2 years, but potentially more years depending on the number of fieldwork hours they require for their intended certification and the length of time their intended degree takes (i.e. a post-bachelor's certificate would take fewer years than a master's degree). While working on their degree, the intern would be required to hold another certification appropriate for the school and ABA setting, such as the BCaBA (if working on a master's level certificate), an RBT (if working on a bachelor's level certificate) or other certification as deemed appropriate by the district, Colorado Department of Education (CDE), and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB, behavior analysis governing body). The intern should be appropriately certified to bill Medicaid for the School Health Services program. The intern should fully implement the BACB code of ethics and the policies and procedures of CDE and the district Board of Education. At all times, the intern is required to follow the prescribed behavioral skill acquisition and behavior reduction protocols, utilize safe & appropriate handing procedures when working with students, maintain student confidentiality, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work and learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide direct behavioral intervention in 1:1 and group settings utilizing a combination of intensive teaching and natural environment training arrangements. Follow and record data for behavioral training protocols. Collect, record, and summarize data on observable student behavior.
Consult with the multidisciplinary team of staff supporting their caseload of students, reviewing the progress and concerns related to student progress with the staff supporting the students, problem solve with the staff on issues of implementation and intervention.
SupportRBTs with issues of implementation, logistics, materials, crisis response, collaboration, and other needs in order to facilitate effective team work and student services.
Consult with the supervising BCBA on issues of ethics, technical skill, expanding competence, supervision hours for RBTs, and other issues in order to prepare to be a competent independent practitioner and in order to satisfy the supervision requirements of fieldwork supervision outlined by the BACB.
Attend weekly special education team meetings in order to serve as a resource and collaborator on the building special education team as well as to sharpen the intern's knowledge and understanding of the special education process.
Deliver assessments to students in need of behavioral interventions for the purpose of supporting the building special education team with implementation of evidence-based interventions, to assess the student for potential addition to the ABA caseload, or to provide consultation to other district schools as a member of the Behavior/Autism team.
Attend monthly ABA team, special education department, and district Professional Learning Community (PLC) and professional development opportunities.
Attend Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings for caseload students as an IEP team member to assist with the special education planning and intervention process.
Maintain certification to practice and bill Medicaid, as outlined by the most recent CDE, BACB, and district guidelines.
Education, Training and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a field that qualifies the candidate to pursue further ABA certification (see updated BACB requirements, typically Behavior Analysis, psychology, special education or a related field).
Enrollment in a degree-seeking/certification program in behavior analysis, either the BCaBA or BCBA. Continuous enrollment in one of these two approved programs is a requirement for this position. If at any time an individual is not actively enrolled in one of these two approved programs, the individual will no longer meet the criteria to hold this position.
Certification as EITHER an RBT (if pursuing the BCaBA) OR a BCaBA (if pursuing the BCBA). It is the individual's responsibility to maintain continuous certification in either of these areas for the duration of their time in this position. Certification must be held at the time of hire. To obtain RBT certification, candidates must pass a 40-hour training, complete a practical competency assessment, and pass a standardized exam. The 40-hour RBT training is not provided by the district or BACB but, rather, is developed and conducted by BACB certificants and is available for free online. The candidate is responsible for locating and enrolling in a training program. The RBT Task List{rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"} serves as the curriculum for the training required for all candidates for the RBT credential. Candidates are responsible for locating and paying for the RBT standardized examination. To obtain the BCaBA credential, candidates must have a bachelor's degree, have completed an approved sequence of ABA coursework, have completed 1,500 supervised fieldwork hours, and have passed a bachelor's level BCaBA praxis exam. Holding the BCaBA credential requires re-certification every other year which is achieved through the accrual of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The BCaBA credential also requires ongoing supervision from a master's level BCBA.
