Join MITRE as a CNC Machinist in our Hardware Fabrication Facility Lab (FFL).
The FFL is part of the Mechanical & Reliability Systems & Proto@type Development Department which provides innovative solutions for electronic proto@types designed for advanced sensing, communication, and navigation systems. Areas of expertise include ground, airborne and shipboard systems. The FFL provides a high quality, cost-effective solution for the greater MITRE community to rapidly field and demonstrate technologies and to solve the mechanical design challenges posed by our Sponsors. The FFL:
Plays a critical role for customer satisfaction and future business development by fielding and demonstrating new technologies to meet mission needs
Partners with projects to prioritize needs and schedules with flexibility to provide a range of services from low cost, quick engineering changes to full-scale design and fabrication
Handles real-time design/engineering changes, installations, and modifications of proto@types
Develops and fabricate a wide range of diverse and unique solutions
Provides alternative to having parts fabricated at a contract manufacturer
Provides low cost, quick turnaround custom proto@types
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Group seeks to hire a talented, creative, and motivated individual who demonstrates familiarity and skill with all the commonly used machine tools. The successful candidate will:
Work with shop supervisor, engineers, and other shop staff to fabricate and produce quality parts
Demonstrate flexibility to work from blueprints, specifications, detailed verbal instructions, or detailed sketches
Demonstrate knowledge and skill to fabricate proto@type and short run production of parts from prints and CAD models with the ability to hold to +/- 0.001 tolerances when necessary
Have knowledge and experience in machining metals, plastics, fiberglass, composites, and wood
Support the engineering design group and technologists applying leading edge technology to develop electronic systems to solve challenging problems
Support fielding of systems and associated travel, as needed, to include kitting, set-up, operation, test and tear-down
Perform additional duties related to shop maintenance and operations including maintaining shop and equipment used in shop processes
Follow all proper safety guidelines including wearing proper PPE
Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and display a collaborative approach in working with the fabrication team
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 2-4 years of related experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent in education, or 2 years' experience and an Associate degree, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience
Understanding of machining and conventional fabrication technologies and experience with the programming, set-up, and operation of computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines and lathes
Ability to set-up and operate manual milling machines and manual lathes
Knowledge of machinist hand tools like micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
Ability to safely operate grinders, shears, sanders, drill presses, horizontal and vertical band saws, table saws, radial arm saws, and all @types of electric hand tools
Knowledge of trigonometry
Knowledge, proficiency, and experience with Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software
Ability to operate wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) systems
Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances
This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Fabrication skills to support high-precision and complex parts using equipment such as 4- and 5-axis milling machines
Knowledge and proficiency with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and ANSI and ASME drafting standards
Working knowledge of 3D & 2D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software
Experience in Mastercam CAD/CAM software
Experience with HAAS CNC machining centers and HAAS CNC lathe
15+ years experience in a research & development (R&D) or proto@type machine shop setting
Working knowledge of Solidworks PDM, or similar data/configuration management software
