The Position
Safety Specialists promote recognized safety and health practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety and health laws and regulations.
This recruitment is for a Safety Specialist - Trainer position within the Safety Consultation and Training Section, located in Las Vegas. Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform a full range of duties consistent with the series concept, including designing, developing, and delivering formal training programs on workplace safety and health regulations, standards, safe work practices, hazard abatement strategies, risk management, and related management systems. Trainings may be conducted at employer worksites or centralized locations to reach multiple employers simultaneously. The incumbent will also provide internal training for safety and industrial hygiene staff within the Division of Industrial Relations (DIR), helping to build internal capabilities and promote regulatory compliance.
Additional responsibilities include conducting research and applying analytical techniques to assess training needs, determining appropriate training frequency and duration, and evaluating participant competency levels before and after instruction. The incumbent will develop course goals, objectives, practical exercises, training scripts, and supporting materials, and will evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. Assignments often involve complex subject matter requiring broad industry knowledge or specialized expertise in a particular field. The Safety Specialist may also orient and train new staff, serve in a lead capacity on team or functional assignments, and contribute to special projects. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, occupational safety and health, or closely related field and two years of adult education experience including curriculum development and course presentation on occupational safety and health related topics; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental, biological or physical sciences, hazardous materials, engineering, public health or related field and four years of experience as described above; OR certification as a Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP); OR an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience; OR one year of experience as a Safety Representative, Training in Nevada State service.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Some travel to rural areas is required.
