The Position
Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify fleet equipment comprised of a variety of light, medium, and heavy automotive and maintenance equipment, landscape equipment, computerized testing equipment, and diesel-fueled electric power generators.-
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept at the advanced journey level, and in addition, either: 1) Function as a lead worker for lower-level skilled Equipment Mechanics on a regular basis by providing training and technical assistance, work assignment and review, and providing input to performance evaluations. Positions at this level are distinguished from the lower level of the series by the lead worker responsibilities for skilled Equipment Mechanic II's and journey level skilled trades workers; or 2) In a correctional environment, function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment. Supervision of a crew of inmates must be within the institution and must be a regular and recurring duty of a position to warrant allocation to this class.
An Equipment Mechanic III (or Level 3) is typically a journeyman-level position focused on the advanced repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a wide variety of equipment and vehicles, including automotive, diesel, construction, and specialized machinery. Diagnosing and Troubleshooting: Identifying the root cause of complex equipment malfunctions and failures, using diagnostic equipment (including computerized tools) and technical documentation. Repairs and Overhauls: Performing both major and minor repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance on various systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and emissions systems. Specialized Work: May include tasks like fabricating or modifying parts, welding, and working on specialized systems like computerized controls and emission systems. Preventative Maintenance: Developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules, performing inspections, lubrication, and adjustments to ensure optimal equipment performance. Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and parts used. Safety and Regulations: Adhering to safety protocols and environmental regulations, including EPA standards. Teamwork and Communication: Collaborating with other mechanics, supervisors, and personnel to ensure efficient workflow.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level experience equivalent to the Equipment Mechanic II; OR one year of experience as an Equipment Mechanic II in Nevada State Service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
Applicants must attach verification of successful completion of an apprenticeship program and/or experienced gained through an apprenticeship program at the time of application.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law required random testing for controlled substances during employment.
Some positions require incumbents to furnish their own mechanic's tools.
