Senior Director, Tax Accounting (Remote- Eligible)
The Position
The Senior Director, Tax Accounting is a senior leadership role which is responsible for steering the global tax provisioning, financial statement reporting, and forecasting operations of Capital One and its acquisitions and divestitures.
As a strategic advisor to the Chief Tax Officer and senior finance leadership, you will play a pivotal role in the Company's effective tax rate and capital planning, as well as partnering to evaluate the tax implications of strategic corporate acquisitions, and forecast tax credit capacities.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Statement & Regulatory Reporting, Forecasting, Capital Planning
Leading the team that is responsible for:
Global Tax Provision: Lead the preparation, review, and signing off on the globalcorporate income tax provision (ASC 740) for quarterly and annual financial statements.
SEC & Regulatory Compliance: Oversee all tax-related disclosures in SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q), ensuring absolute compliance, transparency, and technical accuracy.
Rate & Deferred Tax Management: Manage the company's consolidated Effective Tax Rate (ETR) and supervise the valuation and management of global deferred tax assets and liabilities.
Financial Outlooks: Lead the tax forecasting processes to provide senior executive leadership with predictable, data-driven insights into ETR, DTA, and credit capacity projections to optimize cash flow and enable balance sheet growth.
Capital Planning & Stress Testing: Direct the tax workstreams for corporate stress testing and capital adequacy assessments, including the Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) process.
Strategic Advisory & Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 4 tax professionals, foster a collaborative and inclusive environment, develop team structures that meet future business needs, and invest in associate development beyond the day-to-day.
M&A Advisory: Partner with the Tax Planning team to evaluate the tax accounting and reporting impacts of potential business acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.
Internal Controls: Maintain a well-managed internal control environment over financial reporting for income taxes, ensuring strict compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) standards and company policy.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or other quantitative discipline, or military experience
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation currently active or previously achieved and currently inactive
At least 10 years of progressive corporate tax experience within a public corporation or an accounting firm
At least 5 years in a dedicated people-management capacity leading teams
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Taxation, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Juris Doctor (JD), or Master of Laws (LLM)
Mastery of ASC 740
Expert-level knowledge of accounting for income taxes under US GAAP and SEC reporting regulations. Familiarity with IFRS is a plus.
Strategic Tax Modeling: Exceptional quantitative skills to model complex financial outcomes, tax law shifts, and multi-year corporate outlooks.
M&A Tax Accounting: Strong foundation in the tax accounting nuances of business combinations, purchase price allocations, and post-merger integration.
Tax Technology Acumen: Familiarity with enterprise tax provisioning software (e.g.; Corptax, ONESOURCE) and data tools (e.g., Alteryx, Power BI) to support digital transformation.
Regulatory Frameworks: Proven experience navigating CCAR processes, capital planning, and highly regulated corporate financial environments (ideally within banking, financial services, or large multinational corporations).

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
Remote (Regardless of Location): $217,000 - $247,700 for Sr. Director, Tax
McLean, VA: $238,700 - $272,400 for Sr. Director, Tax
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
