What you'll do...
The General Transportation Manager is responsible for leading transportation operations within a Walmart distribution network, ensuring safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective movement of freight while delivering exceptional service to stores, clubs, customers, and business partners. This role provides strategic and operational leadership across fleet readiness, transportation planning, asset management, safety, compliance, vendor relationships, and associate development while driving a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. The General Transportation Manager partners with cross-functional teams to optimize network performance, leverage data-driven decision making, manage transportation assets, and ensure the successful execution of Walmart's supply chain strategy.
What You'll Do
Lead Transportation Operations
Direct daily transportation operations to ensure on-time delivery, service reliability, and execution of operational goals.
Manage inbound and outbound transportation activities across multiple freight @types and business channels.
Drive optimization of routing, scheduling, capacity utilization, and network efficiency.
Identify opportunities to enhance transportation performance while balancing cost, service, and safety objectives.
Partner across Supply Chain, Fleet Maintenance, Distribution, Store Operations, and Home Office teams to support network initiatives.
Drive Fleet Readiness and Asset Performance
Oversee fleet availability and utilization to meet business demand and operational schedules.
Lead programs that maximize the lifecycle, reliability, and performance of transportation assets.
Guide preventive maintenance strategies that improve fleet uptime and reduce operational disruptions.
Support fleet planning decisions involving company-owned, leased, and third-party transportation resources.
Ensure effective management of parts inventories, equipment replacement strategies, and total cost of ownership initiatives.
Utilize Data and Technology to Improve Performance
Leverage transportation, operational, and financial data to drive business decisions and improve outcomes.
Monitor key performance indicators and develop actionable insights to improve transportation network performance.
Lead adoption of innovative technologies, predictive analytics, automation, artificial intelligence, and digital tools that create efficiencies and reduce costs.
Partner with Technology, Data Science, and Analytics teams to develop future-state capabilities that support business objectives.
Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making across the operation.
Lead Exception Management and Business Continuity
Oversee response strategies for transportation disruptions, service interruptions, and operational escalations.
Drive network preparedness for planned and unplanned events impacting transportation execution.
Implement processes that reduce non-value-added activities and improve operational resilience.
Lead teams through crisis management situations while minimizing customer and business impact.
Ensure resources, training, and technologies are in place to support operational continuity.
Promote Operational Excellence
Champion continuous improvement initiatives that drive productivity, efficiency, and cost savings.
Evaluate transportation processes and implement best practices aligned to Walmart's One Best Way methodology.
Lead root cause analysis efforts to identify and resolve operational challenges.
Collaborate with cross-functional partners to simplify processes, reduce waste, and improve service levels.
Ensure consistency and compliance with standard operating procedures across the transportation operation.
Ensure Safety and Regulatory Compliance
Foster a culture where safety is the top priority for associates, drivers, contractors, and business partners.
Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, EPA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Oversee audits, inspections, corrective action plans, and risk mitigation programs.
Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis processes to prevent recurrence.
Serve as a key compliance leader and representative during regulatory reviews and inspections.
Manage Strategic Supplier and Carrier Relationships
Develop and maintain strong partnerships with transportation providers, suppliers, and third-party logistics partners.
Conduct business reviews and performance evaluations to ensure alignment with operational goals.
Drive accountability through supplier performance metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.
Lead escalation management and resolution of significant transportation service issues.
Identify opportunities to strengthen transportation capabilities through strategic partnerships.
Develop Talent and Build High-Performing Teams
Recruit, develop, and retain a diverse team of transportation leaders and associates.
Create a culture focused on associate engagement, development, inclusion, and empowerment.
Provide coaching, mentoring, and succession planning to strengthen organizational capability.
Promote accountability, recognition, and continuous learning throughout the operation.
Build an environment where associates are respected, supported, and equipped to succeed.
Support Sustainability and Community Initiatives
Lead efforts that support Walmart's sustainability goals, including fleet efficiency, waste reduction, and resource conservation.
Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance through innovative transportation solutions.
Partner with internal and external stakeholders to advance sustainability initiatives and community engagement efforts.
Foster awareness and adoption of sustainable business practices throughout the operation.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Transportation, Logistics, Business, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience leading transportation, logistics, supply chain, fleet operations, or distribution center operations.
Experience managing salaried leaders and hourly associates in a fast-paced operational environment.
Experience analyzing operational and financial metrics to drive business decisions.
Experience managing safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading large-scale transportation or fleet operations.
Knowledge of DOT regulations, transportation compliance, fleet maintenance, and logistics network planning.
Experience implementing continuous improvement or Lean methodologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience using transportation management systems and data visualization tools.
Experience managing third-party transportation providers and strategic supplier relationships.
