The opportunity
Join our dynamic EY Tax team, where deep technical expertise is combined with advanced technology and innovation to deliver exceptional client service. As part of our Business Tax Services (BTS) group, you'll work with a diverse portfolio of clients, from industrialmanufacturers and advanced engineering firms to technology and life sciences companies, helping them navigate the complex intersection of engineering innovation and business strategy.
Our team goes beyond compliance to identify opportunities for growth, efficiency, and risk management, supporting organizations in translating technical advancements into long-term value. This role is particularly relevant for mechanical engineers interested in product development, manufacturing processes, and applied innovation across industries.
Your Key Responsibilities
When you join EY as an EDGE STEM R&D Credits Mechanical Engineering Intern within Federal Tax Advisory (FTA), you will collaborate at the intersection of mechanical engineering, innovation, and consulting, collaborating with a global team to document and evaluate R&D activities.
This role is ideal for those with a background in mechanical design, manufacturing, or systems engineering who are eager to apply their technical knowledge in a business and client-facing environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
Applying your mechanical engineering expertise (e.g., product design, CAD modeling, thermodynamics, fluid systems, and manufacturing processes) to identify and evaluate client R&D activities during technical discussions.
Developing detailed technical narratives that capture qualifying R&D work, translating complex engineering concepts such as design iterations, tolerance analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), and prototyping, into clear, structured documentation.
Analyzing engineering documentation, including CAD drawings, design specifications, test results, and proto@type data, to assess technical challenges related to performance, reliability, manufacturability, and product quality.
Collaborating with cross-functional teams of engineers, scientists, accountants, and legal professionals to deliver high-quality, technically grounded qualitative analyses for clients.
Supporting multiple client engagements, helping manage timelines and deliverables.
Skills and attributes for success
To qualify for the role, you must have:
A predicted undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, supported by a strong academic record.
A minimum 3.0 cumulative college/university GPA.
A solid understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, manufacturing processes, and design methodologies, including exposure to prototyping and product development cycles.
Ability to apply engineering principles to evaluate design challenges, system performance issues, and manufacturing constraints.
An interest working in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver's license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.
The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.
You must reside within a commutable distance of the office location associated with this position.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship, now and in the future.
Ideally, you will have:
A predicted advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field.
Cumulative college/university GPA of 3.2 or above.
Internship, research, or coursework in product design, CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD), FEA/CFD analysis, manufacturing processes, or prototyping and testing.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Ability to translate complex engineering work such as design iterations, testing results, and performance improvements, into clear, structured narratives that highlight innovation.
Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Knowledge of how to leverage firm-approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot to enhance productivity, streamline analysis, and support documentation in a business @context.

The hourly pay range for this job, in the US, is $36.06 to $45.19 per hour. Individual salaries are based on education, geographic location, and alignment to the market data.
