As part of our Business Tax Services (BTS) group, you'll work with a diverse portfolio of clients, from technology companies and software developers to advanced manufacturing, financial services, and life sciences organizations, helping them navigate the intersection of innovation, data, and business strategy.
Our team goes beyond compliance to identify opportunities for optimization, risk management, and value creation, supporting organizations as they develop and implement cutting-edge technologies. This role is especially suited for candidates interested in software development, data analytics, systems architecture, and emerging technologies.
Your Key Responsibilities
When you join EY as an EDGE STEM R&D Credits Technology Intern within Federal Tax Advisory (FTA), you will operate at the intersection of technology, innovation, and consulting, collaborating with a global team to document and evaluate research and development (R&D) activities.
This position is ideal for those with backgrounds in computer science, data science, information systems, or related STEM fields who are eager to apply technical knowledge in a client-facing, business environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
Applying your technical expertise (e.g., software development, data analytics, cloud computing, or systems design) to identify and evaluate client R&D activities during technical discussions.
Developing detailed technical narratives that capture qualifying R&D work, translating complex technical concepts, such as system architecture, algorithms, data models, and software development lifecycles, into clear, structured documentation.
Analyzing technical documentation, including system design documents, code repositories, test results, and data outputs, to assess development challenges related to performance, scalability, reliability, and data integrity.
Collaborating cross-functionally with a global team of engineers, data scientists, accountants, and legal professionals to deliver high-quality, technically grounded analyses.
Managing project timelines and deliverables, supporting multiple client engagements.
Skills and attributes for success
To qualify for the role, you must have:
A predicted undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field, supported by a strong academic record.
A minimum 3.0 cumulative college/university GPA.
A solid understanding of programming concepts, data structures, algorithms, databases, and software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, SDLC), with exposure to system design or data analytics.
Ability to apply logical thinking and technical methods to evaluate system performance, data challenges, and software development processes.
An interest working in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver's license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.
The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.
You must reside within a commutable distance of the office location associated with this position.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship, now and in the future.
Ideally, you will have:
A predicted advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, Business Administration, or Information Systems or a related field.
Cumulative college/university GPA of 3.2 or above.
Relevant technical experience: Internship, research, or coursework in software development, data analytics, cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS), machine learning, databases, or systems engineering.
Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, SQL), data analysis tools, and Microsoft Excel, along with strong proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to translate complex technical concepts such as algorithms, system architectures, and data workflows, into clear, structured narratives that effectively describe innovation.
Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
