Summary This position is located at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility. The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, or to tow or recover equipment. The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions. Responsibilities Major duties include but not limited to: Hauling cargo and fuel, transporting passengers, or tows/recovers equipment. Performing operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires and cleaning and washing vehicle. Operating vehicles have a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds. Vehicles are operated over Federal, state and county roads and city streets to transport personnel, supplies, materials or equipment and tools in all traffic conditions. Driving vehicles in restricted traffic environments on government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions. Operating wheeled vehicles, wheel-mounted tractors; or engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-@type traction. Performing other related duties. During driving down-time may perform duties as patient wheelchair escort, make patient reminder calls and other light clerical duties. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Requirements: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in making couplings between vehicle and towed equipment because safety chains, towbars, and hooks must be lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated In all @types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
