GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a qualified Technician Operations Technician IIto support the safe and efficient operation of the state's transportation system. This position provides essential technical and operational support, maintaining the State of Wyoming's public safety communication systems; including WyoLink as well as other public messaging systems. These communication and messaging systems are heavily relied upon by first responders and other emergency workers in their mission ensuring the health, safety and the welfare of the public. The role of this position is vital in maintaining these systems, and other equipment Wyoming's public safety agencies require, guaranteeing they are operational 24/7 365 days a year.
Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the Old West's history. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Cheyenne is also home to the "Daddy of 'em All" - Cheyenne Frontier Days - Held every last week of July. Wyoming is one of the only seven states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
Repairs and maintains WyoLink equipment and radio sites.
Maintains and repairs roadside communication devices.
Replaces damaged parts; inspects and diagnoses specific problems.
Performs preventive maintenance, emergency repair, and troubleshooting.
This role climbs towers up to 200 feet for radio maintenance and repair.
Installs and maintains vehicle electronics to include radio, repeater and lighting systems.
Subject to on-call rotation
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Ideal candidates will have or be willing to obtain certifications in the following CPR/First aid, FCC GROL, WYDOT Tier I & Tier II certified climber.
KNOWLEDGE:
Basic knowledge of VHF radio operations, trunked systems.
Basic knowledge of electrical systems, including AC/DC power, building/facility electrical services and vehicle electrical systems. This includes circuit components (diodes, resistors, breakers, etc.
The ability to explain the difference between frequency bands, VHF versus UHF/800 MHZ
Knowledge of the FCC rules and regulations governing telecommunications and radio operations.
Knowledge of the following system components and the ability to troubleshoot them: Antenna, connections, mistuned equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Technical Operations Technician I
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Some agencies may require a valid Class C driver's license.
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
May work in extreme weather and involve heavy lifting.
Safely and confidently perform repairs on radio equipment at levels up to 200' working height on a tower.
May be required to conduct repairs 24/7 in all weather conditions.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Occasional overnight travel is required.

Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work, without an acceptable excuse, will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus
Temporary employees accepting a full-time permanent position.
Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.
One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.
Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
