Primary Purpose
The Assistant Coach assists the Head Coach in all aspects of the Men's Rugby Club program, including practice planning, player development, match preparation, team culture, student mentorship, administrative organization, equipment, conduct, and team travel.
This position plays an important role in supporting a safe, competitive, inclusive, and student-centered club environment. The Assistant Coach helps establish consistent training standards, reinforces team expectations, supports player retention and recruitment, and contributes to the long-term development of the club.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Assists the Head Coach with instructing student-athletes in the rules, laws, safety standards, equipment, techniques, and strategies of rugby.
Supports the development and implementation of practice plans, training progressions, and seasonal development goals for both individual players and the team.
Organizes and directs individual, positional, and small-group practice activities as directed by the Head Coach.
Assists with technical and tactical instruction in key areas of rugby, including attack, defense, set piece, contact skills, decision-making, and game management.
Assists with both 15s and 7s rugby training, including skill development, conditioning demands, tactical structure, and match preparation specific to each format.
Assesses player skills and development, monitors players during practices and competition, and keeps the Head Coach informed of student-athlete performance, readiness, and areas for growth.
Assists the Head Coach with determining match strategy, substitutions, player roles, and seasonal development priorities.
Assists the Head Coach with supervising student-athletes during practices, competitions, team events, and travel.
Supports a positive team culture by modeling accountability, respect, discipline, sportsmanship, and commitment to student development.
Builds appropriate rapport with student-athletes and supports a healthy team environment in which players feel challenged, supported, and connected to the program.
Helps mentor student-athletes in leadership, communication, teamwork, and personal responsibility.
Supports player recruitment and retention efforts, including helping introduce new players to the sport, supporting outreach efforts, and connecting prospective students with appropriate program information.
When appropriate, helps connect student-athletes with rugby development opportunities beyond the club, including camps, select-side opportunities, all-star pathways, community rugby opportunities, or transfer-level playing opportunities.
Follows established procedures in the event of a student-athlete injury and supports a safety-first approach to training and competition.
Models sportsmanlike behavior and maintains appropriate conduct toward players, officials, opponents, spectators, College employees, and community members.
Maintains equipment in orderly condition and assists with distributing, collecting, and tracking equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
Performs support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, team rosters, emergency data cards, and other related records.
Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities and upholds the department vision statement, College policies, and code of conduct.
Communicates effectively and cooperatively with the Head Coach, Club Sports staff, athletic trainers, referees, league representatives, students, and College personnel.
On occasion, drives the team in school vehicles to away games, subject to COCC driving approval.
Performs other administrative duties as assigned that support the overall objectives of the program and the department.

CPR certification or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.

Ability to teach rugby skills to players with varying levels of experience, including athletes who are new to the sport.
Ability to contribute to practice planning, player development, and team tactical systems in collaboration with the Head Coach.
Ability to support both competitive performance and a positive student experience.
Ability to build trust and appropriate rapport with college-aged student-athletes while maintaining professional boundaries.
Ability to reinforce team standards, expectations, and culture in alignment with the Head Coach and College policies.
Ability to support student-athlete recruitment, retention, and engagement in a club sports environment.
Knowledge of both 15s and 7s rugby is preferred.
Ergonomic Requirements
Work hours are determined by the supervisor and vary based on business needs and locations. Position assignments may be assigned an alternate schedule to service the campus needs. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods, and possibly in various weather outdoors. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Experience assisting with practice planning, player development, team systems, and match preparation.
Experience coaching or playing both 15s and 7s rugby.
Experience contributing to a positive team culture, student-athlete retention, and leadership development.
Experience recruiting, onboarding, or developing athletes who are new to rugby.
Experience in a higher education environment.
Established knowledge of rugby communities, pathways, organizations, or development opportunities that may benefit student-athletes.
Prior experience with the COCC Men's Rugby Club or a comparable college club rugby environment is preferred.
