Job Summary
The Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) develops inclusive and accessible educational opportunities around the globe, primarily for LSA undergraduates. With approximately 115 study abroad and international internship programs around the world, students with diverse academic interests can pursue an international experience. Our academically rich programs foster intellectual curiosity and intercultural understanding by encouraging students and faculty to engage with host communities through conscious and responsible participation. CGIS is committed to furthering diversity within study abroad.
Responsibilities*
Responsibilities of the CGIS Advising Manager are described below.
30% Supervise a team of 3 or 4 International Program Advisors:
Conduct regular meetings and assess performance.
Participate in the hiring and training of new advising staff.
In consultation with Associate Director, lead advising team in the implementation of policies and practices related to admissions, advising, student sessions, and program coordination.
Implement changes to advising portfolios as necessary.
Ensure advising staff regularly participate in trainings that allow for inclusive and comprehensive advising.
Encourage a positive working environment and in person collaboration.
Develop individual professional development goals with each advisor.
30% Provide advising services for a small portfolio of programs
Help students identify and select appropriate programs, provide information about financial aid options and the admissions process, and serve as primary contact for students participating in these programs.
Respond to student, parent, faculty, and staff inquiries during the various stages of off-campus program participation.
Execute admission and acceptance processes.
Coordinate services and program logistics with program partners.
Facilitate group sessions where needed.
Update program materials and documents.
Provide back up advising for direct reports during absences.
Support advisors in the application review process, particularly with more challenging admissions decisions.
Help troubleshoot student academic cases related to individual programs
Maintain CGIS advising manual.
30% Student support, events, and outreach:
Organize advising related events such as the annual study abroad fair and winter advising fair.
Oversee CGIS participation in new student orientation, Transfer Day, Spring Welcome Day, Festifall, classroom visits, departmental events, and other requests to present CGIS programming options and provide general advising.
Oversee and implement pre departure orientation.
In conjunction with Senior Advisor, train student employees and program returnees on how to best represent the center and answer questions about CGIS programs.
Implement best practices and edit resources for advising, orienting, and supporting students of various identities within study abroad.
Help ensure programs are accessible to a wide range of students.
Promote study among a large range of students, including those who may not have previously considered study abroad.
10% Special projects as assigned:
Serve on campus committees.
Represent CGIS at professional meetings and conferences.
Make occasional site visits.
Assist with special events and emergencies; including willingness to work evenings and weekends and make adjustments to in person schedule as necessary.
Required Qualifications*
Minimum of 3 years of direct advising experience in study abroad and 2 years of supervising regular or temporary staff.
Comprehensive and practical knowledge of study abroad in a higher-education setting, including experience troubleshooting a variety of issues.
Masters degree.
Ability to work independently and prioritize deadlines both individually and across a team with a strong attention to detail.
Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build strong team dynamics and interact positively with stakeholders from a wide range of disciplines, experiences, and identities.
Experience in a front facing student role including presentations, tabling, and advising in both one on one and group sessions.
Previous experience helping students who do not traditionally study abroad to overcome barriers to participation.
Desired Qualifications*
3 or more years of progressive supervisory experience.
Knowledge of intercultural theory and/or pedagogy.
Familiarity with UM systems and Terra Dotta.
