Job Description
This full-time Marine Mechanic role supports the Elevator Support Unit, performing contracted skilled trades work on weapon and aircraft elevators and their associated systems aboard U.S. Navy ships. Based in San Diego, CA, the position focuses on installing, operating, maintaining, repairing, and modifying shipboard elevator mechanical and hydraulic equipment, with potential travel within and outside the continental United States. The role involves hands-on field service, technical analysis, and close collaboration with customers and subcontractors in a controlled naval shipyard environment.
Responsibilities
Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify shipboard elevator mechanical and hydraulic equipment on U.S. Navy vessels.
Perform a variety of maintenance and technical support activities on elevators and elevator doors, including equipment, integrated systems and subsystems, and associated software at customer and field locations.
Analyze and evaluate elevator operations and performance to identify issues, optimize reliability, and improve system functionality.
Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electro-hydraulic malfunctions, grooming elevators to eliminate problems in the minimum possible time.
Install, upgrade, and remove elevator and elevator door components while ensuring proper coordination with engineering field changes and technical directives.
Apply a comprehensive understanding of production methods and mechanical processes to complete complex assignments safely and efficiently.
Interface directly with customers, manage subcontractor activities, and provide clear work direction to other team members as needed.
Develop, interpret, and use technical documents, including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports, and task or trip reports.
Schedule work, prepare status reports, and brief customers and senior management on progress, findings, and recommendations.
Perform duties outside of core specialty when required to complete installations or work assignments, maintaining flexibility in a dynamic shipboard environment.
Conduct on-site installation of equipment while following established safety, quality control, and testing procedures.
Calibrate and perform minor repairs on tools and equipment to ensure accuracy and readiness for use.
Generate condition reports and technical documentation that accurately describe equipment status, deficiencies, and required corrective actions.
Estimate or quote technical work scopes when needed, supporting planning and resource allocation.
Maintain compliance with NAVSEA standards and shipyard protocols, including access credentials and security clearance requirements.
Essential Skills
Marine mechanical or outside machinist experience (5+ years), including hands-on maintenance, repair, and overhaul of shipboard or heavy industrial mechanical systems.
High school education, trade school, or equivalent, combined with at least 4 years of related mechanical experience.
Strong proficiency in troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and testing of mechanical systems in a field or shipboard environment.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose, maintain, and repair complex electro-hydraulic systems used in naval or industrial equipment.
Ability to read, interpret, and mark up technical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and controlled work packages.
Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and working in controlled shipyard environments.
Capability to conduct on-site installation of equipment while following established safety, quality control, and testing procedures.
Skill in calibrating and performing minor repairs on tools and equipment to maintain operational accuracy.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and field service, including independently identifying root causes, performing failure analysis, and executing repairs with minimal supervision.
Ability to develop and use technical documents such as formal work processes, procedures, test documents, reports, and trip reports.
Strong communication skills to interface with customers, manage subcontractors, and brief senior management.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience related to maintenance and repair of shipboard aircraft elevators, ordnance handling equipment, and vertical package conveyors is preferred.
Experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of marine electro-mechanical and hydraulic systems is highly desired.
Prior shipboard experience, particularly on naval vessels, is preferred.
Current or active Department of Defense Secret clearance or higher is preferred.
Related technical training, degrees, or professional certifications in mechanical, marine, or industrial disciplines are preferred.
Experience with electrical or programmable controls troubleshooting is a plus.
Experience generating detailed condition reports and technical documentation is beneficial.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and communication is desirable.
Ownership of personal hand tools appropriate to the trade specialty, as designated for the role.

Work Environment
Work is performed primarily on Naval Base San Diego (32nd Street) aboard amphibious class ships such as LPDs, LHDs, LHAs, and LSDs. The environment is a controlled shipyard setting governed by NAVSEA standards, with work taking place on and around shipboard weapon and aircraft elevator systems. You can expect a hands-on, industrial atmosphere that includes mechanical and electro-hydraulic equipment, technical documentation, and field service activities both pier-side and potentially at sea. The role may involve travel within and outside the continental United States as required by project needs. Work is typically full-time, with schedules aligned to shipyard and project requirements, and may include periods of overtime or off-shift work to support operational commitments. Appropriate industrial attire and personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety while working in and around active naval vessels and heavy machinery.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.50 - $30.30/hr.
