Job Description
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at CDM Smith you will help deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for critical water infrastructure projects. Working with multidisciplinary teams, you will lead and manage the planning, study, and design of mechanical systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, and related infrastructure. Provides technical leadership to teams creating mechanical engineering designs for water and wastewater treatment facilities. This includes HVAC systems master planning and studies, HVAC and plumbing systems, mechanical systems (co-generation), sustainability initiatives, energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy solutions, and green building projects-ranging from moderate to high complexity to meet client needs.
Reviews draft designs for compliance with federal, state and local regulations and signs off on completed designs.
Ensures that firm policies and practices are followed on all designs.
Performs site reviews and studies, as needed, to ensure designs are aligned with location specifications.
Updates design requirements as necessary.
Contributes to the firm's technical knowledge management by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new and special case designs and studies.
Submits technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals.
Collaborates with sales staff to create proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposal (RFPs).
Reviews draft proposals for adherence to firm, industry, state, local and federal regulations and best practices.
Meets with current and potential future clients to review their current and future design needs.
Attends conferences, symposia, etc.
to improve the visibility of the firm's products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.
Acts as the primary point of contact for external client and related industry contact.
Collaborates with clients and government officials to clarify technical questions and provides updates to project management as needed.
Performs other duties as required.
Provides technical guidance and training to more junior staff.
Mentors more junior staff and develops them for future growth within the discipline and firm.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, architectural, or chemical engineering, or in engineering technology or a related discipline.
Professional engineering (PE) license.
12 years of related experience.
Equivalent experience may be considered in place of a degree.
Travel (domestic and/or international) may be required depending on the role's specific duties, responsibilities, and workload.
Driving Requirements
An appropriate and valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Project Management Professional (PMP), Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) desired.
Proficiency with HVAC load calculation tools (e.g., Trane, TRACE, HAP, Energy Plus)
Skills & Abilities
Expert knowledge of computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD), including 3D and 4D software and best practices.
Expert knowledge of engineering design principles.
Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, and related tools).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.
