Summary This position is for an Engineering Equipment Operator/Gardener located at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center, operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs at Long Beach, CA. Responsibilities Required to know the uses of the different sets of controls or operation of the equipment and attachments and be skilled in handling these controls to perform the work. Basic knowledge of the nature of the soil and features of the terrain to determine the proper approach according to the condition of the surface and subsurface. Must manipulate tractor and attached equipment simultaneously; and make multiple corrections from equipment to tractor; connecting drive shafts and mechanical lines, and operating tractor while manipulating gang mowers or other attachments. Must be skillful in the manipulation of power lift gate controls. May operate boom slope mowers to cut grass on slopes, as applicable, while operating -tractor on level ground such as along roadsides. Operates tractors and other equipment on various terrains, between shrubs and trees, around fences and bushy areas where tree limbs and rocks tend to cause clogging or jamming in equipment. Adjusts equipment to perform various @types of jobs such as the height of mower blades, rate of application for sprayers, etcetera. Responsible for the annual implementation of Standard Operating Procedures related to turfgrass, plants, trees, and shrubs. Must keep detailed and accurate records such as computer documents/spreadsheets of all activities performed and completed throughout the calendar year. Conducts routine daily duties without direct supervision. Performs operator maintenance, ensuring that the oil, fuel, tires, grease, or any other @types of lubricant or condition is maintained at the proper level or condition for the tractor, street sweeper, mowers, edging machines and any other related equipment in use, including the motor vehicles when assigned to that duty. Work Schedule: Mon-Fri ~ 05:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Engineering Equipment Operator/PD140030 Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate to heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate different controls on various @types of equipment. Work requires frequent bending stooping, kneeling, walking and exposure to constant vibrations and jolting caused by movement of equipment over uneven and rough terrain and running of other power tools. Position may require lifting and moving weight exceeding 50 pounds with or without assistance, or up to 100 pounds assisted. Also, considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location some of the controls and attachments, the operators are frequently required to work in awkward of strained positions.
