This full-time Electrical Engineer/Designer role offers the opportunity to serve as an integral member of a consulting team focused on large institutional and commercial projects. You will lead projects from schematic design through construction administration, perform detailed electrical calculations, and prepare high-quality specifications. Responsibilities
Lead electrical design projects from start to finish, ensuring coordination of all electrical design requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Perform detailed electrical calculations and prepare clear, accurate specifications for institutional and commercial projects.
Oversee construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, conducting site visits, and completing punch list inspections.
Complete field work for existing condition assessments and renovation projects, documenting findings and integrating them into design solutions.
Coordinate and collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, owners, and other project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
Use AutoCAD and Revit to develop and maintain accurate electrical design drawings and models.
Apply applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC, IBC, IECC/ASHRAE 90.1, and NFPA, to ensure code-compliant designs.
Perform lighting calculations using software such as VISUAL or AGi32 to support lighting design and documentation.
Maintain a strong work ethic and attention to detail, ensuring quality and consistency in all design and documentation tasks.
Support the consulting team by contributing to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and best practices in electrical design.
Essential Skills
4-8 years of consulting electrical engineering design experience, preferably on large institutional or commercial projects from schematic design through construction administration.
Ability to lead projects independently from concept through completion, including coordination of all electrical design requirements.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit for electrical design and documentation.
Working knowledge of electrical codes and standards, including NEC, IBC, IECC/ASHRAE 90.1, and NFPA.
Experience performing electrical calculations and preparing detailed specifications.
Experience overseeing construction administration tasks such as reviewing submittals, answering RFIs, conducting site visits, and managing punch lists.
Capability to complete field work for existing condition assessments and renovation projects.
Strong work ethic and attention to detail in all aspects of design and documentation.
Effective communication skills with engineers, architects, owners, and other team members.
A four-year electrical engineering degree from an accredited college or university, or an associate degree with 5+ years of relevant experience.
EIT certification at minimum and active pursuit of a PE license.
Eligibility to obtain an Electrical PE license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to secure it quickly through reciprocity.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with commercial and institutional construction projects in a consulting environment.
Proficiency with lighting calculation software such as VISUAL or AGi32.
Demonstrated ability to work on large projects in the greater Richmond area or similar markets.
Interest in ongoing professional development and growth within a consulting engineering practice.
Desire to work closely with licensed engineers and benefit from structured training and mentorship.
Comfort working in a flexible, team-centered environment that values collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Work Environment
This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, totaling approximately 40 hours per week. The role offers a hybrid work arrangement, providing flexibility to work remotely once onboarding is complete and you are fully up and running. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
