The Medical Assistant supports a busy urgent care clinic by providing hands-on patient care, preparing patients and exam rooms for visits and procedures, and accurately documenting information in the electronic medical record. This role combines clinical tasks, patient interaction, and administrative duties to ensure efficient, high-quality care and a smooth experience for patients and providers.
Responsibilities
Greet patients in a professional and welcoming manner and guide them through the visit process.
Measure and document vital signs accurately, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other required metrics.
Prepare patients for examinations and procedures by reviewing concerns, explaining steps, and ensuring comfort and privacy.
Prepare examination rooms for patient visits and procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available and functioning.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment in exam rooms and common areas.
Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with procedures by documenting medical history, case notes, and other relevant clinical information.
Collect patient data in person and by phone, documenting symptoms, concerns, and relevant history clearly and accurately.
Relay instructions, treatment plans, and follow-up information from the physician or nurse practitioner to the patient or authorized representative in a clear and respectful manner.
Document all patient encounters, care provided, and messages in the electronic medical record for provider review.
Take complete and accurate messages, route messages to the appropriate area, and ensure timely follow-up.
Enter orders and referrals as directed, and set up cases in the EMR system, including basic registration and updating of patient demographics.
Accurately document medical information and updates in patient records, ensuring completeness and compliance with clinic standards.
Track and route test results to physicians and nurse practitioners for review in a timely and organized manner.
Communicate test results to patients when directed by the physician or nurse practitioner, following clinic protocols.
Facilitate patient care activities by scheduling ancillary tests and appointments as ordered by providers.
Reinforce patient education and instructions provided by the physician or nurse practitioner, ensuring patient understanding.
Perform basic triage activities as appropriate and directed by the physician or nurse practitioner, according to site operations.
Maintain adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies by monitoring stock levels and restocking as needed.
Perform basic computer tasks and use the electronic health record proficiently for daily documentation, communication, order entry, and scheduling.
Process orders appropriately in the EMR and support general patient care workflows throughout the clinic.
Provide general patient care assistance, including basic clinical support and phlebotomy as needed, within scope of practice.
Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to support a high-volume urgent care environment and ensure efficient patient flow.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of experience working as a Medical Assistant.
Proficiency in obtaining and documenting vital signs accurately and efficiently.
Hands-on experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting, preferably urgent care or similar high-volume environment.
Ability to prepare patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures in an organized and timely manner.
Demonstrated proficiency using electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation, order entry, and communication.
Strong skills in documenting medical history, case notes, and patient concerns clearly and accurately.
Experience processing orders, entering referrals, and updating patient demographics in an EMR system.
Ability to track, route, and communicate test results according to provider direction and clinic protocols.
Competence in basic triage activities as directed by providers, within scope of practice.
Solid organizational skills to maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked clinical environment.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and staff.
Ability to handle a high patient volume while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and attention to detail.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or similar medical assisting certification is highly beneficial.
Experience in urgent care or fast-paced outpatient settings is an advantage.
Phlebotomy experience and comfort performing blood draws in a clinical environment.
Familiarity with scheduling ancillary tests and coordinating follow-up care.
Ability to reinforce patient education and instructions in a clear, supportive manner.
Strong customer service orientation and a patient-centered approach to care.
Flexibility to work occasional extended hours (for example, until 6 PM) as clinic needs arise.
Interest in professional growth and a long-term career path within a healthcare organization.
Comfort working with a variety of specialties and openness to cross-training in different clinical areas.
Work Environment
This role is based in a busy urgent care clinic that typically sees 50-100 patients per day. The schedule follows daytime hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility to work until 6:00 PM if needed. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, requiring strong collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical and administrative staff. You will use electronic medical record and electronic health record systems extensively for documentation, order entry, and communication. The clinic emphasizes maintaining a clean, organized, and safe setting for both patients and staff. Clinical attire appropriate for direct patient care in an urgent care setting is expected.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
