At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.
The mission of the Disability Determination Services (DDS) is to improve the quality of life for Minnesotans with disabilities who apply for or are receiving Social Security disability benefits by making timely, consistent, and accurate disability determinations.
As a Disability Examiner you will evaluate and determine eligibility for Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefits for claims filed by Minnesotans. This involves obtaining and analyzing large volumes of digital evidence, interpreting and applying relevant policies and regulations, documenting findings in written summaries, and making eligibility decisions. You will independently manage a caseload of claims at various stages of development, receive new claims weekly, and maintain standards for quality, timeliness, and production. The position requires extensive reading and written communication, daily phone communication, and use of dual-screen monitors and SSA computer systems to complete work. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and multitasking abilities, reading comprehension, analytical and decision-making skills, and commitment to providing excellent customer service in a professional setting.
Duties include:
Obtaining medical, vocational, and functional evidence through mail, telephone, and electronic systems
Reviewing, analyzing, and determining the sufficiency of the evidence when received
Requesting additional evidence, clarifying discrepancies, and ordering consultative examinations as necessary
Ensuring the confidentiality and security of all claimant information in accordance with federal regulations
Documenting relevant findings, providing written analysis of the evidence, and preparing claims for medical assessment
Applying Social Security regulations and policies to determine eligibility
Communicating and interacting professionally with claimants, legal representatives, medical records departments, school personnel, SSA staff, and other third parties throughout the claims process
