Job Title: 2nd Shift Utility Assembler
Job Description
The 2nd Shift Utility Assembler plays a key role in a large industrial metal manufacturing facility by assembling materials for shipment, maintaining a safe and productive work area, and filling in for various production positions as qualified. This role supports best-in-class customer service by ensuring orders are assembled accurately, packaged to specification, and handled safely throughout the production process.
Responsibilities
Assemble material for shipment or components in accordance with specifications and instructions on work orders.
Select material from specific heats or based on physical condition as directed by work order requirements.
Count materials accurately and record heat or test numbers, symbols, random lengths, and other required information on orders.
Verify that assembled and packaged materials meet order specifications, including measurements and packaging requirements.
Use hand tools for banding, securing, and packaging materials safely and efficiently for shipment.
Understand and follow work order packaging specifications to ensure correct labeling, banding, and preparation of materials.
Handle materials safely using forklifts and overhead cranes when qualified, including moving, staging, and loading materials.
Maintain safety, quality, and productivity standards for each job assignment throughout the shift.
Inspect materials and finished orders for accuracy and condition, identifying and addressing basic issues to prevent shipment errors.
Adapt to different roles on the production floor by filling in for absent positions as qualified, excluding maintenance.
Follow written and verbal instructions, standard operating procedures, and safety guidelines at all times.
Complete all required documentation and inventory tracking for materials, including recording lot and heat numbers.
Support shipping and receiving activities by picking, staging, and preparing orders for outbound shipment.
Contribute to a clean and organized work area to support safety and efficient workflow.
Perform all other duties as assigned, with responsibilities and activities subject to change as operational needs evolve.
Essential Skills
Ability to successfully pass a skills-based assessment evaluating reading, math, inspection and measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail and inspection accuracy when counting materials, recording heat and test numbers, and verifying order specifications.
Proficiency in assembly and packaging tasks in accordance with detailed work instructions and customer specifications.
Ability to read, understand, and follow work orders and packaging specifications.
Proficiency with hand tools used for banding, securing, and packaging materials.
Comfort using measurement tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify lengths, sizes, and specifications.
Basic math skills for counting, measuring, and accurately recording material data.
Basic problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic production environment.
Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with metal products and basic fabrication or processing concepts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Certified fork truck or forklift operation experience preferred, including safely moving materials and staging orders in a production or warehouse environment.
Overhead crane and hoist experience preferred, including use of sheet lifters, chains, slings, hoists, or hooks to handle metal materials.
Experience with hand tools specifically used for banding and packaging material.
Experience in shipping, receiving, or order fulfillment, including picking, staging, and preparing orders for outbound shipment.
Experience with inventory tracking and documentation, including recording lot numbers, heat numbers, and tracking materials through production.
Prior experience in the metals or steel industry preferred, such as work in steel service centers, fabrication shops, or similar environments.

Work Environment
This role is based in a standard, large manufacturing facility focused on industrial metal products. The environment is not climate controlled, so temperatures can vary with the seasons. You will work on a production floor of around 40 team members, using equipment such as hand tools, banding tools, forklifts, and overhead cranes or hoists to handle and prepare metal materials. The typical schedule follows a four-day workweek, with 2nd shift hours of 2:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The dress code requires steel-toe boots, jeans, and a T-shirt to support safety and practicality in a production setting.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.19 - $24.19/hr.
