Job Title: Medical Assistant
Job Description
This role combines high-volume patient phone support with hands-on clinical assistance in a busy infectious disease department. You will spend approximately 75% of your time answering incoming patient calls, directing them to the registered nurse on duty, and providing friendly, accurate information. The remaining 25% of your time will be spent in the clinic, rooming patients, taking vital signs, and entering clinical data into the EPIC electronic medical record system. This position is ideal for a certified medical assistant who enjoys patient interaction, excels in customer service, and feels comfortable working both at the front desk and in a clinical setting.
Responsibilities
Answer a high volume of incoming patient calls (approximately 30-50 calls per day) in a professional, courteous, and timely manner.
Listen carefully to patient needs and direct calls appropriately to the registered nurse on duty or other clinic resources.
Provide clear, empathetic communication to patients, ensuring they feel supported and informed throughout their interaction.
Remain seated and focused at the phone station for extended periods while maintaining strong attention to detail and a calm demeanor.
Assist in the clinic by rooming patients in one of the department's 14 exam rooms as needed.
Obtain and document accurate vital signs and other basic clinical information for each patient encounter.
Enter patient information and visit details into the EPIC electronic medical record system with a high level of accuracy.
Support a teaching practice environment that sees approximately 70-100 patients per day, collaborating with providers and other medical assistants.
Work closely with a team of medical assistants, taking primary responsibility for phone coverage while supporting clinical workflows when needed.
Follow clinic protocols and procedures to ensure patient safety, confidentiality, and a high standard of care.
Contribute to a positive, patient-centered culture by demonstrating strong customer service, professionalism, and teamwork.
Essential Skills
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential, with current certification in good standing.
Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a medical assistant in a clinical setting.
Hands-on experience using EPIC or a similar electronic medical record system.
Proficiency in core medical assisting tasks, including rooming patients and taking vital signs.
Strong customer service orientation, with the ability to communicate clearly, calmly, and empathetically with patients over the phone and in person.
Comfort working in a phone-based role, including sitting in the same location for multiple hours while handling 30-50 calls per day.
Ability to multitask effectively, balancing phone responsibilities with in-clinic duties as needed.
Attention to detail and accuracy when documenting patient information and entering data into EPIC.
Ability to collaborate with nurses, providers, and fellow medical assistants in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
RMA through AMT OR CCMA through NHA
Basic Life Support (BLS for providers)
Previous experience in an infectious disease or specialty clinic environment is a plus.
Experience working in a teaching practice or academic medical setting is advantageous.
Demonstrated ability to manage high call volumes while maintaining a professional and patient-centered approach.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a busy clinic.
Work Environment
This position is based in an infectious disease department with 14 exam rooms and a teaching practice that sees approximately 70-100 patients per day. You will work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., alongside a team of nine medical assistants, with primary responsibility for phone coverage as the dedicated front desk medical assistant. The role requires extended periods of sitting at a phone station while handling a steady volume of patient calls, as well as time spent in exam rooms assisting with patient care. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and patient-focused, with regular interaction with nurses, providers, and other clinical staff. Dress is expected to be professional and appropriate for a clinical healthcare setting.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
