Job Description
The Preproduction Engineer works closely with the Preproduction Manager and project teams throughout all phases of production projects. This role focuses on basic electrical power, lighting, and low-voltage installations while supporting design, budgeting, constructability reviews, value engineering, and project documentation. The position bridges engineering, estimating, and field operations to ensure projects are well-coordinated, cost-effective, and constructible.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Preproduction Manager, Project Managers, and Estimating team to develop project budgets, evaluate cost alternatives, prepare change orders, and support proposal development.
Support project teams by providing electrical design input, budgeting support, and coordination of 3D models and drawings for assigned projects.
Keep the Preproduction Manager informed of changes, design modifications, and project developments throughout the preproduction process.
Manage the project submittal process and Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring timely and accurate communication and documentation.
Provide technical support to field and shop personnel during production and site construction, translating design intent into practical installation guidance and working on site as needed.
Attend project meetings and site visits to document existing conditions and gather information required for design and coordination.
Develop and document value engineering solutions by identifying alternative design approaches and quantifying the associated cost impacts.
Assist and collaborate with the engineering team in developing electrical designs that meet project goals, performance requirements, and constructability standards.
Support the collection and organization of schedule and production data from preproduction, engineering, VDC, field, and production floor teams to aid project control and reporting functions.
Support MEP coordination efforts and manage the upfront setup of projects in various client platforms, working closely with other trade contractors.
Contribute to the construction as-built and documentation process by helping to ensure accurate record drawings and project close-out documentation.
Perform other related duties as required and assigned to support successful project delivery.
Essential Skills
Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline focused on electrical construction.
Proficiency with CAD tools, including Revit and AutoCAD, for electrical design and coordination.
Experience with electrical systems design, including basic power, lighting, and low-voltage installations; open to 0-5 years of design experience depending on level of role.
Knowledge of electrical engineering principles as they apply to construction projects.
Experience in construction administration, including handling submittals, RFIs, and documentation.
Ability to participate in MEP coordination and collaborate with other trades.
Strong project support skills, including budgeting assistance and constructability review participation.
Effective communication skills to work with managers, engineers, estimators, field personnel, and other stakeholders.
Ability to interpret and translate design intent into clear guidance for field and shop teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with additional CAD and modeling tools such as Inventor and Navisworks.
Background in construction, with exposure to preconstruction or preproduction processes.
Experience in VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) environments or workflows.
Field experience as an electrician or similar role with strong electrical installation knowledge and some design exposure or ability, typically with 5+ years of experience.
Familiarity with developing value engineering options and quantifying cost impacts of design changes.
Experience supporting the development of as-built documentation and close-out packages.

Work Environment
This role operates in a mixed office and field environment. In the office, you will use CAD and modeling software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor, and Navisworks to support design, coordination, and documentation efforts. You will collaborate closely with preproduction, engineering, estimating, VDC, and project control teams, as well as interact regularly with field and shop personnel. The position includes attending meetings and visiting active job sites to document existing conditions, support construction activities, and help translate design intent into practical installations. Work may involve occasional time on the production floor or in the field, where appropriate safety practices and attire are required. The environment emphasizes collaboration, technical excellence, cost-effective solutions, and strong coordination among multiple trades and stakeholders.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $68640.00 - $79040.00/yr.
