Position Summary
For six weeks, Upward Bound provides an intensive summer residential program on the Colorado State University campus. Approximately 50 participants will receive: (1) instruction in composition, literature, world languages, mathematics, ACT/SAT Preparation, and laboratory science, (2) advising in the areas of educational and career opportunities, and (3) exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote personal and social growth.
The Upward Bound Academic Instructor is a part-time Upward Bound staff member within the College Access Unit of the Access Center.? Instructors develop a class curriculum, instruct students in one of the four required content areas (language arts, laboratory science, mathematics, and world language), facilitate tutoring and activities, and assist in supporting the Access Center Mission.

Essential Duties
All applicants should clearly demonstrate in their application experience with, commitment to, and knowledge of disadvantaged youth, as well as content expertise relevant to the position for which they are applying. Applicants must also be able to work closely with Upward Bound staff and be available for program events, including mandatory staff training, weekly staff meetings, facilitation of afternoon and evening activities, and evening study sessions. All personnel will periodically share responsibilities for transporting students to/from their home communities in CSU vehicles.
Academic Instructors are responsible for supervising Upward Bound students during class time through the six-week summer program. The instructor's primary role is to facilitate a classroom that fosters a love of learning and facilitates a culture of respect and student growth. For this environment to develop, UB instructors make healthy connections with student participants, hold all students accountable to Upward Bound behavior expectations, support students through tutoring, and may include facilitation of activities outside the classroom.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree by time of employment.
Demonstrated expertise in content area(s) relevant to program objectives. (Students receive rigorous, experience-based instruction in a variety of content areas that fit under the subjects of language arts, world language, science, and mathematics)
Experience working with, instructing, and/or supervising youth (first-generation, high school age preferred)
Ability to design and implement course content clearly and creatively. This includes the development of specific course curricula, holistic evaluation of student success, effective classroom management, and an inclusive classroom approach.
Incorporation of ACT/SAT preparation activities into course materials and assignments.
Instructors must be available for class instruction, weekly staff meetings, once-a-week tutoring, once-a-week extracurricular facilitation, training, and some large group events.
Preferred Qualifications
1 year of experience working with an Access Center College Access Program or related program (i.e., pre-collegiate, Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, Summer Bridge).
Experience working with first-generation, low-income students.
Compensation
Academic instructors will be compensated at an hourly rate of $18-20/hr, and will be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Additional hours may be compensated based on approval from the Director and/or Assistant Director. Academic Instructors intending to hold additional summer employment positions with the university must notify Sean Jaster, the Director of Upward Bound, as it may impact summer wages and approved hours.

Salary Range
$20/hr.
