The purpose of this position is to supervise an Institution Community Work Service Crew (ICWC) or a Sentencing to Service (STS) work crew. This includes training and leading crewmembers, coordination, planning and organizing of projects, maintaining and accounting for equipment, interact with local and state units of government and non-profit agencies and report writing. The nature of the work is to be environment and human service orientated with emphasis on positive work values and community accomplishments.
This is a physically demanding working position, which requires the crew leader to be able to perform all tasks along with the crewmembers. The scheduling of workdays is necessary to accommodate clients and project managers and may include both weekend and evening work.
Minimum Qualifications
To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Experience in providing or the ability to provide lead work direction or supervision sufficient to assign work; provide training on equipment/tool use and work activities; monitor and manage work performance; and motivate work crews to complete projects safely and efficiently.
Knowledge of rough carpentry or construction.
Basic computer and data entry skills sufficient to complete computerized reports.
Skills in operating and maintaining an inventory of hand and power tools.
Valid Class D driver's license.
Current certification in First Aid and CPR (needed prior to hire).
Skills in record keeping sufficient to document and maintain client and project files and equipment inventory.
Oral and written communication skills sufficient to lead and instruct work crews on work projects and equipment/tool operation; provide constructive feedback on work performance; and complete and provide reports on work performance and project status.
Organizational skills sufficient to plan and coordinate work activities and to prioritize, schedule and report on work projects.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow policies and procedures.
Ability to work collaboratively with other agencies and organizations.
Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
6 months of experience in rough carpentry or construction that includes framing skills and basic skills in reading and understanding blueprints.
Basic knowledge and skills in grounds keeping or landscaping techniques.
Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
Experience working with justice-involved persons.
Experience working in a correctional facility.
Physical Requirements
The completion of pre-placement physical components may be required for this position. These components consist of a tuberculosis screening. Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
