Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will serve as the Supervisory Paralegal Specialist in the Criminal Division in the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Missouri. Typical work assignments will include: Supervising and managing a staff of legal support professionals. This includes planning work to be accomplished, setting goals and priorities, and monitoring individual staff performance; Overseeing performance management, developing training plans, and providing technical advice and assistance to resolve problems among staff; Performing complex, in-depth legal research using automated research tools as well as traditional sources; Researching, developing, and drafting memoranda of law, briefs in response and in support of pre-trial motions, appeal briefs, jury instructions, and action memoranda; Ensuring all case deadlines are met and all filings comply with procedural requirements; Communicating directly with other government agencies and serving as a primary contact with client agencies; Using word processing and litigation support equipment and devices, including creating documents and exhibits and organizing and retrieving data; Researching, analyzing, and resolving complex legal issues that arise in obtaining evidence and responding to requests for information; Obtaining relevant information from federal and state courts and regulatory agencies. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must meet the specialized experience, as defined below: Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is defined as providing paralegal support to a professional attorney staff; examining and processing a variety of legal documents; conducting research, analysis and evaluation of data in response to complex or sensitive requests; drafting briefs, pleadings, litigation recommendations, or other legal documents and correspondence, using a variety of electronic or manual filing systems to acquire and store information; document findings and preparing recommendations; searching and reviewing legal references, case files and other sources for information and data required by attorneys or court personnel. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
