Job Title: Engineering Technician V - Mechanical Technologist (NWS 00878)
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physical, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
This position supports the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world's largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.
The NIF Directorate has an opening for an Engineering Technician V Mechanical Technician to support the Optics Production Loop. The successful candidate must be able to work in a cleanroom environment. The successful candidate will perform their duties under close supervision and report to the NIF Optics Engineering and Maintenance Manager. Due to the vast and varying @types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require Engineering Technician V to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Essential Duties
Fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical components and systems.
Operate shop equipment, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.
Apply machining, precision mechanical assembly, and system debug experience to resolve complex mechanical issues.
Set up and operate milling machines and lathes.
Read and interpret mechanical drawings and apply them to machining and assembly tasks.
Provide technical support for a broad range of activities, including vacuum, electrical, pneumatic, and plumbing/cooling installations.
Extract and apply technical information from sketches, drawings, and verbal or written instructions to resolve fit, interference, and functional electro-mechanical problems.
Use advanced methods to collect and analyze data and test results against established performance parameters, report outcomes, and identify issues.
Create supporting documentation and graphics using computer-based drafting, design, engineering, and scientific software.
Perform physical duties as required, including climbing stairs, lifting equipment, and standing for extended periods.
Marginal Duties
Independently plan and execute deployment, fabrication, troubleshooting, assembly, and disassembly of complex electro-mechanical components and systems, including selecting materials, equipment, and methods.
Assist in developing test parameters; troubleshoot and test materials, components, and systems; identify problems; and contribute to solution recommendations.
Independently identify, analyze, evaluate, and report results for complex electro-mechanical problems using sound judgment
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
A.S., or equivalent experience, in Optical or Mechanical technologies.
Experience with production technologies, including evaluating and testing processes.
Ability to perform work deliberately, carefully, and safely.
Demonstrated ability to work within deadlines to perform multiple tasks and communicate effectively with managers and customers.
Ability to follow detailed procedures and accurately record process parameters.
Experience with database, data manipulation skills, personal computers, and associated software

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Government Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matters.
