Summary Demonstrates the fundamental knowledge of the unit and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care. Responsibilities The Nurse Manager (NM) is the designated first-line supervisory authority and is responsible and accountable for the 24/7 operation of their assigned units and provides coverage for other NMs as needed. The NM is responsible and accountable for the direction and supervision of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. They function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and supervisor providing leadership to the team. The NM is assigned to a Mental Health (MH) section, e.g. Inpatient MH, Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP), or Outpatient MH. They influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes in support of recovery-oreinted care. They provide leadership in support of access to mental health care, flow through the various levels of care, and full support for the expansion of video telehealth to support clinical services. The NM mentors and provides oversight to their assistant nurse manager. They ensure that the subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. This may include regular travel to the off campus Mental Health areas (located in the various CBOCs) on an ongoing basis. The NM has the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of subordinates. The NM has the continual responsibility planning work to be accomplished by subordinates. They set priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work. They assign work to subordinates based on priorities and selective consideration of the difficulty, requirements of the assignments, the capabilities of the subordinates, and evaluation of the performance of subordinates. They make recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates. They give advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters. The NM will hear and resolve the complaints of subordinates and will refer unresolved serious complaints to higher level supervisors. They will recommend and/or take disciplinary action where appropriate. The nurse manager will identify developmental and training needs of subordinates and provide or make provisions for such development and training. Furthermore, they will be responsible for maintaining continuous accreditation readiness of their units, including adherence to The Joint Commission (TJC), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other accreditation and regulatory standards, as indicated. The NM is responsible for performance improvement data, customer service, patient satisfaction, and employee and patient safety. They will interview applicants and review employee relations. They will maintain the standards of care and practice, and the work environment. The nurse manager actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. They maintain the responsibility of staffing their units on a continual basis (24/7). They ensure that that staffing meets established nursing hours per patient day requirements and works with other nurse managers to identify and share resources. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
