About the Position
The Saint Paul City Attorney's Office is currently accepting applications for two (2) full-time prosecutor positions in its Criminal Division. The pay range will be dependent on qualifications.
Associate Attorney Salary Level: $52.55 - $59.78; $109,304 - $124,342.40 Annually
Attorney Salary Level: $55.74 - $68.82; $115,939.20 - $143,145.60 Annually
Senior Attorney Level: $65.35 - $81.88; $135,928 - $170,310.40 Annually
Attorneys in the Criminal Division represent the City and are assigned to handle high volumes of a variety of criminal cases from charging through appeal.
Here's what you can expect to do:
These positions will involve prosecuting individuals charged with petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor offenses. Typical work performed includes:
Screens cases for criminal charges by reviewing and evaluating reports from law enforcement, assessing evidentiary issues and the merits of cases, and recommending approval or declining of charges.
Represents the City by preparing for and making appearances at arraignments, pretrial hearings, jury trials, sentencing, and other court proceedings; keeping affected parties informed as to case status; negotiating resolution of cases, and recommending disposition of cases.
Conducts case investigations by identifying and researching legal issues, interviewing victims and witnesses, and obtaining evidence from sources such as phone records, business records, video, audio, or other digital evidence, background searches, and other evidentiary materials.
Drafts, files, and/or submits criminal complaints, memoranda, discovery requests, appeals, proposed court orders, pleadings, motions, letters, briefs, and other legal documents.
Drafts ordinances, resolutions, rules, and policies.
Plans, organizes, mentors, and leads the work of lower-level employees within the Criminal Division as requested by the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, or Supervising Attorney.
Information Specific to these Positions:
These positions perform a wide variety of routine to complex professional legal work at the full performance level in the Criminal Division. The worksite for these positions is at the Saint Paul City Attorney's Office located in downtown Saint Paul. While some telework may be possible upon approval of the City Attorney, this position is not a remote position.

Position Requirements
Job classification and salary will be commensurate with experience.
Associate Attorney: Candidates for positions as an Associate Attorney will have at least a Juris Doctorate Degree and a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota and candidates must have at least two years of experience as an attorney in active public or private practice.
Continued employment as an Associate Attorney is contingent upon maintaining such licensure.
Attorney: Candidates for positions as an Attorney will have at least a Juris Doctorate Degree and a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota and candidates must have at least 3 years of directly related attorney experience.
Continued employment as an Attorney is contingent upon maintaining such licensure.
Senior Attorney Level: Candidates for positions as an Attorney will have at least a Juris Doctorate Degree and a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota and candidates must have at least 7 years of directly related attorney experience.
Continued employment as a Senior Attorney is contingent upon maintaining such licensure.
