The Accounting Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership and oversight of key accounting functions for Metro Transit to ensure compliance, accuracy, and effective financial operations. Positions in this classification are assigned responsibility for one of three functional areas: accounts payable and accounts receivable, capital project accounting, or accounting operations. The Accounting Supervisor ensures sound financial practices, supports accurate financial reporting, and provides supervision and guidance to accounting staff within the assigned functional area.
This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. The candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
What you would do in this job
General
Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to accounting staff, address operational issues, maintain workflow, and escalate critical matters as appropriate.
Support staff development through coaching, training, and performance management to promote professional growth and effective team performance.
Provide backup support to the Accounting Manager to ensure continuity of operations and leadership.
Coordinate work with finance staff, accounting supervisors, and internal stakeholders to support reconciliation activities, financial reporting, and operational priorities.
Support preparation of financial reporting requirements, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), annual audits, grant reporting, and internal management reports.
Promote collaboration, cross-training, and process improvements to strengthen internal controls and operational effectiveness.
Foster a workplace environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable staff and oversee daily processing of transactions.
Ensure compliance with accounts payable and accounts receivable policies and procedures.
Review transactions to ensure vendor payments and customer receipts are processed accurately and in a timely manner.
Monitor accounts payable and receivable activity to address past-due collections or payment issues.
Coordinate with procurement staff, project managers, and internal departments regarding invoice processing, payments, and receivable activity.
Reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable subsystems within the financial system of record to maintain accurate financial data.
Provide updates on vendor payments, receivables, and other accounts payable and receivable activity impacting operations or capital programs.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
Education/Experience:
Any of the following combinations of experience in accounting, budgeting, financial management, or related financial operations and completed education in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or a directly related field:
High school diploma/GED and ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, budgeting, or financial management, including three (3) years of leadership experience, which may include supervisory, management, coaching, mentoring, or staff development responsibilities.
Associate's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field and eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, budgeting, or financial management, including three (3) years of leadership experience, which may include supervisory, management, coaching, mentoring, or staff development responsibilities.
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field and six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, budgeting, or financial management, including three (3) years of leadership experience, which may include supervisory, management, coaching, mentoring, or staff development responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for governmental organizations, government accounting standards, and accounting practices and principles.
Knowledge of government financial reporting requirements, including preparation of annual financial reports.
Knowledge of financial management and accounting systems, including automated financial systems used for financial tracking and reporting.
Knowledge of financial operations within complex, multifunctional organizations and the coordination required to support organizational priorities and timelines.
Skills in using financial management and accounting systems to monitor and manage financial activity.
Skills in preparing and analyzing financial statements and financial reports.
Skills in developing and utilizing financial forecasting models to support budgeting, variance analysis, and financial planning.
Skills in identifying unusual or suspicious financial transactions to support internal controls and prevent fraudulent activity.
Skills in customer service and stakeholder support, including working with vendors, internal customers, and external partners to resolve financial issues.
Ability to communicate effectively and actively listen to others, demonstrating that perspectives and concerns are understood.
Ability to build and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with staff, leadership, and internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, and financial requirements to staff and stakeholders.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, while meeting critical deadlines.
