Description
Own the Mission. Build the Program. Serve Those Who Serve.
CRST The Transportation Solution is seeking a Government Services Director to lead the strategy, growth, and execution of our U.S. military freight program across all service branches. This role is built for a proven DoD freight leader who has owned carrier performance inside the Defense Transportation System and brings the credibility to shape long-term relationships at the installation and program level.
This is a high-impact opportunity for someone who understands how government freight truly works - tenders, compliance, agent networks, and capacity - and can translate that expertise into a scalable program that drives meaningful growth for CRST and reliable service for the men and women of the U.S. military.
How You'll Work
Location : Preference for candidates open to relocating to Birmingham, AL (Flatbed Solutions HQ).
Travel : Up to 50%, based on installation engagement, agent development, and business needs
Compensation : This pay scale represents a good faith estimate of the salary wage range the company reasonably expects to pay upon hire for this position: $90,000-$150,000 per year. A final offer amount will depend on factors such as prior relevant experience, skills, and location.
Benefits : Comprehensive package including medical, dental, and vision coverage; prescription drug and telemedicine services; company-paid life and disability insurance; retirement savings with company match; paid time off, holidays, and parental leave; plus additional voluntary benefits and employee discounts.
Additional Compensation : Total compensation may also include other forms of pay such as overtime or discretionary incentives, as applicable.
About the Role
As the Government Services Director, you will serve as CRST's primary commercial and operational interface for our DoD freight division. You will own the full program - from agent network development and tender strategy to compliance, capacity, and performance reporting. You will build relationships with Transportation Officers and installation leadership, shape how CRST is positioned across the Defense Transportation System, and drive the revenue growth that establishes CRST as a preferred carrier for U.S. military freight.
This role is not about transactional freight moves. It is about deep program ownership, regulatory credibility, and the ability to represent CRST as a trusted partner to the people who move the U.S. military.
What You'll Do
Own the overall strategy and roadmap to accelerate CRST's DoD book of business, including lane targeting, pricing strategy, capacity sourcing, and margin management
Serve as the primary point of contact with Transportation Officers and DoD installations across all geographies, aligning CRST's service model to installation needs and preferences
Lead all activities related to DoD tenders and solicitations under CRST's SCAC codes, including awards, refusals, and performance management through the sales agent network
Design and execute a regional development plan for increasing government freight, identifying where to add new agents or expand responsibilities of existing agents
Develop and enforce best-practice playbooks for agents handling DoD freight, including tender triage, response time standards, communication expectations, and escalation paths
Leverage CRST's owner-operator model and brokerage authority to design capacity strategies for flatbed, oversize, and specialized military freight, including surge deployment and port-related operations
Own key relationships with primes, 3PLs, and program integrators under DFTS and related programs to capture subcontract and parallel freight opportunities
Ensure rigorous compliance with all applicable DoD, DTR, and DoDI 4500.57 transportation and traffic management policies, including security, HAZMAT, AA&E where applicable, and financial auditability of transportation payments
Establish KPIs and reporting for the government services program and report regularly to executive leadership on performance, revenue, and capacity utilization
Partner with recruiting, safety, and capacity teams to attract and qualify owner-operators suited for military work, including base access, security checks, and specialized equipment requirements
What Great Looks Like
Program ownership: You hold the full DoD freight program - strategy, agents, compliance, and performance - and operate with the confidence of someone who has done this before
Revenue growth: The DoD book of business scales steadily, with staged targets hit at acceptable margins and a clear path to long-term program expansion
Agent excellence: Your regional agent network is structured, accountable, and consistently responsive - with playbooks that drive performance and reduce execution risk
Regulatory credibility: Zero major compliance events, clean financial auditability, and a reputation with DoD installations as a carrier that follows the rules and delivers on commitments
External influence: Transportation Officers, primes, and program integrators view CRST as a go-to carrier for key lanes, driven by the relationships you've built and maintained
What You Bring
7-10+ years in transportation or logistics, including 3-5+ years directly managing or selling DoD freight - general freight and/or AA&E/sensitive cargo - with measurable growth results
Demonstrated success building or significantly growing a DoD freight program, including responsibility for tenders, pricing, and performance
Deep understanding of how Transportation Officers and DoD installations operate freight programs, and how commercial carriers fit into the Defense Transportation System and DTR framework
Hands-on experience with DoD freight platforms and processes, including SDDC successor processes, DFTS or similar third-party programs, TPPS billing, and relevant tender systems
Proven ability to work through agent networks, including training, performance management, and change management for independent sales agents
Strong commercial acumen - lane analysis, pricing, P&L ownership, and the ability to model a growth plan at significant revenue scale
Preferred Qualifications
Background in flatbed, heavy-haul, or specialized carrier operations handling military freight, project cargo, or deployment moves
Prior leadership role specifically focused on Government Services, DoD Programs, Defense Logistics, or a comparable program
Existing or prior security clearance, or demonstrated eligibility to obtain one
Familiarity with DoD financial and auditability requirements for transportation payments, including TPPS and DFAS processes
CLTD (Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution) or CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional)
