Position Summary
The Accelerator Technologist IV- Cryogenic Technician supports SLAC's Helium Cryo Plant by performing advanced mechanical installation, assembly, maintenance, and repair activities to this world-class process plant. This position requires a high degree of technical skill and versatility in maintaining electro-mechanical refrigeration process systems, instrumentation & controls, vacuum and utility support systems, including ability to troubleshoot the system process and its functional components. Work is performed under minimal supervision while maintaining strict adherence to SLAC¿s Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) standards and respectful workplace guidelines.
The Accelerator Technologist IV is expected to perform assignments of advanced complexity in electro-mechanical assembly and maintenance, with a firm understanding of the 2K helium refrigeration process; with ability to troubleshoot, plan and perform work in one or more areas of instrumentation/controls, vacuum technology, general utilities or other key skills to support cryogenic operations. The Accelerator Technologist IV is highly proficient and will independently plan and conduct a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project. Assignments may be of a scheduling and planning nature, coordinating work performed by other individuals, ensuring efficient use of resources and monitoring target dates.
Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.
Your specific responsibilities include:
Plan, organize, and perform complex mechanical, field assembly, and installation tasks using drawings, sketches, process diagrams, procedures and verbal instructions.
Repair, assemble, test, and troubleshoot system components and assemblies; expected to take initiative, exercise judgment, able to recommend or make improvements in techniques, operations and procedures related to cryogenic process.
Serve as Task Leader when assigned¿plan, coordinate, and direct team tasks; forecast schedules; and interface with engineers and area managers.
Ensure safe and compliant work practices; follow WPC policies, lockout/tagout procedures and all safety protocols.
Mentor and collaborate with others.
Operate various power tools such as drill motors, band saws, pneumatic tools, and grinders; operate a 5-ton overhead crane.
Conduct precision measurements and electrical testing using micrometers, calipers, optical alignment devices, gauges, microscopes, and meters.
Perform additional related duties as assigned.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in technical support and maintenance activities.
Must obtain and maintain all required SLAC ES&H certifications (e.g., crane operation, lockout/tagout, confined space, etc.).
Ability to demonstrate advanced proficiency, able to perform technical support in multiple core cryo disciplines
Advanced-level knowledge and understanding of `thermal balance of coldbox heat exchangers¿, the thermal load- LINAC/Cryo Module operation, and management of plant mass helium inventory
Highly proficient communications and computer skills.
Proficiency in the design and use of tooling, fixtures, and precision measuring instruments.
Strong understanding of vacuum systems and gas purity conditioning practices.
Skilled in the use of mechanical and electrical testing equipment.
Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and respectful workplace behavior.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record for driving vehicles around SLAC site.

Note: This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The expected pay range for this position is $60.28 (Step 1) - 72.84 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
