What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer to apply work planning, process, and technical judgement experience to develop programs, manage large-scale projects, lead multi-disciplinary teams, evaluate and improve processes, and execute test operations in the field in support of Sandia¿s national security mission!
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Lead and/or participate in high-consequence test activities involving one-of-a-kind test hardware, rocket motors, and energetic materials.
Develop programs and collaborate with test sponsors throughout Sandia National Laboratories and strategic partners.
Evaluate, develop, and improve processes aiding in developing, planning, and conducting large-scale test activities.
Work with large, multi-disciplinary teams to apply concepts of work planning and controls, systems engineering and requirements development, and project management.
Lead and present in design reviews, test readiness and safety reviews, pre-job briefings, management reviews, and capability briefings.
Travel and off-hours work may be required periodically based on test location and mission needs.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
Experience leading teams and projects, working as a team member and/or as a team leader.
Demonstrated self-motivation, positive attitude and willingness to work in an environment sometimes requiring rapid and accurate decision making with potentially high consequences.
Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to accept responsibility and take on more than one assignment at a time.
Experience with formal project management (planning, scheduling, cost management) and corporate Work Planning & Controls process.
Experience applying concepts of Systems Engineering and Configuration Management.
Experience with response of mechanical/structural systems and components to dynamic environments; materials science; experimental structural mechanics, including:
Digital data acquisition systems,
Structural mechanics measurement methods and associated transducers,
Interpretation of measured structural response data, and
Computational solid mechanics using Sandia's in-house solid mechanics codes and/or commercial codes.
About Our Team:
The Validation and Qualification Sciences Group is responsible for large-scale experimental activities in Tech Area III. The Group consists of six departments within 1530 with the responsibility for developing and delivering large scale experiments to provide information on the performance, safety, and reliability of nuclear weapons and other systems and to acquire data to validate computational simulations of these events.
