This position will be part of MNIT's Human and Social Digital Services (HSDS) team, which supports agency teams at these state agencies: Department of Human Services (DHS), MNsure, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), and Direct Care and Treatment (DCT). The MNIT HSDS team combines development and IT operations with a DevOps approach to ensure the reliable and efficient delivery of critical technology systems that serve counties, families, and individuals across Minnesota.
As a Lead Azure Database Engineer, this position will provide technical support in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and ongoing support of Azure Databases and Data Lakes, with a primary focus on the Data Lakehouse and its integrated data reserves. The responsibilities will include administering, maintaining, and securing data to ensure efficient and reliable data storage solutions. The position will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize data workflows, support data-driven decision-making, and implement best practices for data security and integrity in Azure environments. This position also will provide mentorship to any junior Database Engineers.
This position requires an employee to be onsite at 540 Cedar St., St. Paul, Minnesota at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location. Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of three (3) years of IT related experience in SQL Server on-prem database administration, Azure Data Lake administration, management of ETL and ETL pipelines, Data Warehousing and SQL Scripting.
Experience must include:
Demonstrated ability to write complex SQL queries
Experience with Azure and Azure Dev Ops concepts and processes
Ability to work independently and in a team environment to address business requirements quickly securely and in a timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding.
Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experiences.
Education in Information Technology (IT) or an IT related field may substitute for experience as follows: a master's degree for eighteen (18) months of experience; a bachelor's degree for one (1) year; and an associate's degree for six (6) months.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years' experience using and administering Databricks
Two or more years diagnosing, troubleshooting and resolving issues with Azure Data Pipelines
Two or more years administering and optimizing Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server in hybrid environments. This aligns with the expectations for the Azure Database Administrator Associate certification, which emphasizes managing SQL Server and Azure SQL services.
Two or more years designing relational schemas, normalizing data, and building scalable models that support analytical and transactional workloads. This is a core responsibility highlighted in Azure data engineering roles.
Two or more years' experience with Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, Synapse pipelines, or similar tools for ingesting and transforming data across systems.
Two or more years' experience with Performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, workload management, and troubleshooting performance bottlenecks.
Experience with Data Security and governance, network security, encryption, auditing, and compliance controls for data services.
