Join a mission-driven team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and help protect, maintain, and improve the health of all Minnesotans The Environmental Health Division is seeking a Data Management Specialist to support the Radioactive Materials Unit. This position plays a critical role in protecting public health by managing regulatory data systems, coordinating financial and operational processes, and supporting licensing and compliance activities. The role serves as the unit's subject matter expert for electronic licensing systems and works closely with staff, regulated licensees, and internal partners to ensure accurate data, efficient workflows, and high-quality customer service.
Primary Responsibilities:
Serve as the subject matter expert, review submissions, ensure accurate data, assign applications, run reports, track performance metrics, and coordinate system improvements.
Process purchase orders and invoices, coordinate with vendors and finance staff, and assist with grant tracking and documentation.
Monitor shared communications, assist licensees and staff with questions, manage equipment and dosimetry tracking, respond to data practices requests, and help coordinate meetings and logistics.
Maintain website and program materials by updating website content, develop forms and guidance documents, and ensure materials meet accessibility and communication standards.
In accordance with HR/LR Policy #1422 Telework, this position is eligible for up to 50% telework for applicants who live in Minnesota or in a bordering state within 50 miles of the assigned work location. Candidates residing outside of Minnesota or in a bordering state within 50 miles of the assigned work location at the time of application must be able to relocate to Minnesota within 30 days of their start date. The telework policy may exempt employees who live more than 50 miles from their primary work location from the 50% in-office requirement, depending on job requirements, helping the State of Minnesota access top talent across the state.
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of experience supporting regulatory or public health programs. This experience must include at least two of the following:
Managing or analyzing electronic licensing or data systems.
Coordinating workflows or tracking program performance metrics.
Developing or maintaining procedures, guidance documents, or website content.
Processing financial transactions, purchase orders, or grants.
Training or assisting staff or regulated parties on system use or program processes.
A bachelor's degree in public health, environmental health, business administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for 12 months of experience. An associate's degree in one of these fields may be substituted for 6 months of experience.
Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:
Ability to analyze data and make recommendations to improve workflows, system processes, or program operations.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience training or assisting staff and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise independent judgment, and solve problems in a regulatory or public health setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Environmental Health Licensing systems, or similar regulatory data management systems.
Experience applying state, department, or division policies and procedures, including data practices and records management.
Ability to develop, maintain, and promote guidance documents, procedures, forms, or accessible web content.
Strong organizational and analytical skills, including tracking Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and identifying opportunities to improve workflows.
Experience providing training or technical assistance to staff or external stakeholders in a regulatory, public health, or compliance-focused program.
