DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of the Agency head or higher-level officer within the Information Technology Division/Unit, the Network Systems Administrator is responsible for the configuration, installation, and maintenance of the information technology systems, networks, and telecommunications. This is technical work that involves providing management of network and communication systems to ensure maximum performance and reliability. An employee in this class serves as a technical interface for system engineering, software integration and customer service to isolate issues and problems. The Network Systems Administrator provides the team with optimal technical recommendations for implementing devices, systems, collaborations suites, or any device requiring network connectivity. Work is reviewed through meetings and conferences to ensure technical objectives are being met. This position requires a confidential relationship to a policymaker.

Duties and Responsibilities:

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

Oversees the administration of infrastructure services such as, Microsoft Server Exchange, WSUS, DNS, DHCP, WINS, MS-IIS, basic network security, VMware environment and the Active Directory domain.

Oversees the functions of the network and application systems technicians to ensure awareness of and resolution of issues regarding changes and/or problems that may affect the performance of the network system and related applications.

Oversees the installation, testing, configuring and maintenance of desktop and network operating systems and software platforms.

Works in conjunction with a higher-level officer to ensure that all systems are kept up to date and protected from security treats by implementing approved security solutions utilizing firewalls and IDS, also remote access solutions utilizing ACLs, certificates, and VPNs.

Monitors, upgrades, repairs, and replaces all layer one through four devices (RF-equipment, switches, wireless bridges, routers, packet shapers, and firewalls).

Provides support to other IT personnel and end users for issues including installation, training, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of hardware and software systems.

Performs back-up and recovery on all systems and software systems where needed.

Installs and maintains telephone system and ensures that telephone and voice mail systems are operational.

Installs and tests software on computers and performs periodic system and application audits.

Installs and monitors systems and network administration solutions; investigates and resolves system and network inefficiencies and outages.

Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and monitors software and hardware products for internet and intranet applications; assists users with technical issues/problems relating to the internet and intranet.

Installs, maintains, tests and monitors universal power supplies, battery banks, and monitors environmental conditions that affect infrastructure performance.

Monitors local area network operations and solves local area network applications problems; installs, integrates, customizes, enhances, troubleshoots and tests local area network hardware and software.

Maintains the inter-office Wide Area Network communication systems.

Assists in monitoring, evaluating and resolving hardware/software configuration system performance problems.

Assists in the creation and implementation of policies and procedures of the DPW's infrastructure and its usage.

Assists in the coordination, management and implementation of infrastructure projects.

Prepares written operations and training manuals.

Provides desktop support as needed for users.

Assists co-workers in the completion of related tasks and provides appropriate guidance when needed.

Acts as liaison with third-party vendor for procurement and technical support.

Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
