We are seeking a talented team member to help us develop mechanical and electromechanical systems. As an intern you will be working with teams of passionate engineers and scientists who design, analyze, and test systems for all of APL's Mission Areas. Your primary responsibility will include a combination of computer-aided design, analysis, assembly, and test and evaluation of mechanical, mechatronic, robotic, or electromechanical systems.

You will work with and actively collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists every day.

You will generate the files and documentation necessary to facilitate the fabrication of your designs.

Depending on the project, you will 3D print your models or initiate fabrication of your designs.

You will also communicate with the manufacturing teams responsible for fabricating parts from your models and drawings.

You will order the necessary hardware to assemble your designs, plus perform the assembly and testing yourself.

You will give presentations to communicate results to team members.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

Are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field.

Have a passion for CAD and practical experience using CAD software, possibly in support of class projects, graduate research, or during a prior internship.

Are able to obtain an interim Secret security clearance prior to reporting and ultimately acquire a full Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Are pursuing dual degrees or have equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering or field.

Have CAD experience in either SolidWorks or Creo Parametric.

Are experienced or interested in performing finite element analysis (FEA).

Have previous dynamic systems controls and mechanism design experience.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
