Summary The Transportation and Garage Supervisor supervises and coordinates transportation and garage operations for the VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System (VAFHCS), Bath VA Medical Center. The position reports to the Supervisory Program Specialist (Fleet Manager) and ensures transportation services are provided in a safe, timely, and efficient manner in support of medical center operations. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent provides day-to-day technical and administrative supervision over transportation and garage employees. Assigns work, sets priorities, provides instructions, monitors progress, and reviews completed work for compliance with instructions, safety requirements, and established practices. The supervisor resolves routine operational problems and refers unusual or complex issues to higher-level management. Maintains time and attendance records, leave requests, and basic personnel documentation. Participates in employee performance evaluations, recommends training needs, and supports disciplinary or corrective actions in accordance with VA policy. Plans and schedules work on a daily and weekly basis based on workload requirements, staffing levels, and established priorities. Adjusts schedules to address absences, emergencies, and changing operational needs. Provides on-the-job instruction and guidance to employees on proper work methods, safety practices, and use of equipment. Supervises daily transportation activities including vehicle dispatching through VetRide, routing, scheduling, and coordination of drivers. Ensures transportation services meet operational needs while complying with VA, Federal, and state regulations governing vehicle operation and driver qualifications. Ensures required vehicle inspections, trip logs, and usage documentation are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Reviews incident reports and ensures corrective actions are implemented as required. Supervises garage activities related to basic vehicle servicing, preventive maintenance coordination, inspections, and minor repairs performed by garage staff or contracted services. Ensures vehicles are maintained in safe operating condition and available to meet transportation requirements. Maintains service and inspection records and ensures tools, equipment, and supplies used in garage operations are properly accounted for and safely maintained. Ensures employees follow all applicable VA safety standards, infection control practices, and motor vehicle safety requirements. Conducts routine spot-checks of work in progress and completed work to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Reports safety hazards and takes corrective action within the scope of authority. Supports the Veterans Transportation System (VTS) by assisting with daily operations, scheduling coordination, and adherence to established procedures. Provides operational input to higher-level supervisors or VTS leadership as requested. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is sedentary; however, it also involves walking, standing, bending and carrying of items including books, supplies and parts and driving motor vehicles. Travel is required for inspection of maintenance and repair work, accident investigation and visiting customer agencies. Work is performed in an office setting and frequently in a maintenance shop setting. There is frequent exposure to dirt, grease, noise and machinery. Incumbent may be required to travel approximately 200miles a day commuting between different facilities. Incumbent may be required to trouble-shoot equipment in remote areas.
