TERM: Temporary and flexible - approximately 4 months from mid-May through mid-September

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Intern will support the Financial Services team with the annual audit, compliance activities, reporting, account reconciliations, and seasonal high-volume financial transactions that support MBL's research and educational mission. The role offers hands-on experience in Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Grants Accounting, exposure to the industry-leading Oracle NetSuite software, and the development of advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Assist with audit preparations, including analyzing general ledger activities and creating reconciliations as directed.

Assist administratively with financial audit checklist and upload of support documentation to auditor portal as directed.

Manage and perform revenue and gift accounting, set up cost centers, process cost center transfer documentation.

Receive, review, process, monitor, and expedite expenditures for completeness, duplicate payments, and proper supporting documentation checking for accuracy and approvals.

Create journal entries and compile support documentation.

Occasionally assist with AP and AR e-mail inbox management.

Occasionally resolve, respond and/or document simple AP and AR inquiries.

Assist with written procedural documentation.

Other accounting duties as assigned.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Excellent written and oral communication skills, time management, personal organization, and attention to detail.

Ability to work in an accurate and timely manner and prioritize multiple tasks from different projects, with minimum supervision.

Ability to recognize and escalate discrepancies.

Basic knowledge of standard software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, File Manager) and accuracy with data entry.

Solid knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Creating and maintaining organized electronic filing systems.

Inspired by being accountable and by contributing within a collaborative team culture.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Work experience is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires sedentary work (exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects). Worker must be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, push, pull, use fingertips, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions. Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

LOCATION:

This position is on-campus and is not eligible for remote or alternative work locations.
