Summary This position is located in the Library Service within the VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) in Dallas, TX. The Library Technician performs an extensive variety of technical support services such as materials acquisition and processing, support of automated systems and equipment and overseeing the Interlibrary Loan Program. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Fills Interlibrary loan requests from staff; Checks the holdings of other VA libraries in VALPAC (books and audiovisuals) or DOCLINE (articlets0 or OCLC (articles or books) for items needed for library patrons; Assists with the checking of incoming interlibrary loan requests from outside libraries from the DOCLINE or OCLC Interlibrary Loan systems; Locates articles in the library collection, either physically on the shelves, on microfilm or digitally through available electronic resources and verifies citations as needed; Sends articles electronically as PDF files. At times, article loaning may require mailing an actual copy of a journal issue or a print book to another library via US mail or other guaranteed delivery service; Enters orders in purchasing system and uses Purchase Card for ordering, receiving and reconciling material that has been received; Contacts vendors as necessary to ensure receipt of proper items; Annotates financial log/records, certifies invoices and pays invoices in the financial obligations management systems; Assists with shelf maintenance to ensure materials are in proper order. Reads shelves periodically looking for any books that might have been shelved incorrectly and checks material for condition, making recommendations to the appropriate librarian concerning items that need to be weeded, repaired or replaced; Maintains the online catalog and enters all purchasing information for each item that is ordered; Acquires and processes new library material which includes placing book and media orders with vendors, obtaining cataloging, maintaining records in the integrated library management system and material processing which includes attaching labels, stamping new material with property identification and attaching bar codes to material to ensure accurate checkout of items; Maintains records for all computerized equipment and troubleshoots computer problems on both network computers and patient internet computers; Maintains library equipment and services equipment to keep in running condition; Assists library users in locating material in the library; Provides basic technical support and troubleshooting to library patrons for computer issues including basic functions such as downloading a PDF, attaching a file, selecting a printer or saving a file and use of library equipment; Checks in all returned materials, including items loaned to other libraries through Interlibrary Loan; items may be received in person, or by regular mail, or by commercial delivery; Assists patrons with checking out material, placing holds and renewing library items; Receives incoming telephone calls, forwarding calls to the appropriate staff person; Assists with receiving and processing incoming mail to ensure that it is delivered to the correct Library Staff member and notes if any action is required; Serves as the main timekeeper for the Library Service; Serves as the department's PIV card administrator; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet the following requirement: Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Library Technician and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes working in a library assisting patrons with a variety of tasks such as finding materials, basic computer/copier troubleshooting, general reference and directions; fulfilling Interlibrary Loan processes; maintaining an Online Library catalog by maintaining records, checking in/out library materials, entering new patrons; and entering purchasing information in order to create purchase orders for library materials. May be required to move and/or shelve sections (6-7 shelves) or books. Will be required to bend, stoop and reach. May be required to lift up to, but not in excess of 50 pounds. May be required to work at a computer terminal for as much as 85% of the day. Work is performed in an office setting with normal safety procedures.
