Why This Role Matters
The Director, Electrical (Alpharetta) is the department head and practice leader for AHA's Georgia Electrical group. This role is accountable for technical excellence, team leadership, delivery consistency, and client outcomes-and is expected to contribute meaningfully to growth through client development, pursuit strategy, and project leadership.
This is a highly visible leadership position with a clear path to expanded firm leadership opportunities.
Practice Leadership
Lead the Georgia Electrical practice to deliver high-quality, code-compliant, constructible designs across targeted markets (including mission critical and high-performance buildings).
On a selective project basis, prepare conceptual electrical scope narratives / Basis of Design (BOD) documentation to establish early technical direction, define design intent, and align stakeholders (clients, architects, and internal teams).
Provide senior technical leadership for complex systems (power distribution, lighting/controls, emergency power, UPS, renewable integration, fire alarm interfaces), including basis-of-design direction when needed.
Support equipment/system selection and vetting (system components and products) to confirm conformance with engineering design intent and performance specifications, as requested on complex projects
Establish and enforce department standards for design quality, calculations, documentation, and coordination (including templates, details, specifications, and best practices).
Own the Electrical QA/QC program for the GA team: define review gates, assign reviewers, track trends, and reduce rework.
Provide senior technical leadership for complex systems (power distribution, lighting/controls, emergency power, UPS, renewable integration, fire alarm interfaces), including basis-of-design direction when needed.
Maintain proficiency and oversight of tools and workflows (Revit/AutoCAD, calculation methods; SKM Power Tools preferred).
Review and apply Professional Registration Seal to all electrical and fire alarm drawings produced for AHA MA offices projects.
People Leadership (Hiring, Development, Performance)
Build and retain a high-performing GA Electrical team: staffing plan, recruiting strategy, interviewing, selection, and onboarding.
Provide day-to-day leadership, mentoring, and coaching for engineers/designer engineers/designers working on various design tasks such as the layout of the electrical rooms, UPS rooms, generator equipment yards, etc.; develop succession plans and senior bench strength
Lead performance management for the GA Electrical team: goal setting, feedback cadence, performance reviews, and promotion readiness.
Define and execute a department training roadmap (technical, project delivery, coordination, and leadership development).
Project Resourcing & Operational Management
Own GA Electrical resource planning: align staffing to backlog, schedules, and project priorities; proactively identify capacity gaps and hiring needs.
Partner with Project Managers to support predictable delivery: scope clarity, internal handoffs, milestone planning, and coordination discipline.
Monitor team performance indicators (utilization trends, rework drivers, delivery bottlenecks) and implement corrective actions.
Perform electrical QA/QC project reviews per the AHA Project Schedule.
Maintain and update AHA electrical details, specifications and standards.
On a selective basis, prepare technical reports detailing cause of damage / failure, damage observed, and test results.
Support MA Electrical Group from a technical support standpoint in review contractor submittals to determine conformance with plans, specifications, and codes.
Client Leadership & Growth Support
Serve as a senior client-facing leader for electrical scope: participate in key meetings, resolve technical issues, and support long-term client relationships. This includes attending meetings with owners, clients, or architects, as necessary to provide additional technical support for the AHA project manager and/or electrical design team.
Support business development by contributing to pursuits: scope narratives, staffing approaches, fee inputs (as requested), interview participation, and differentiation of AHA's electrical practice.
Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic growth priorities for the Georgia market.
Firmwide Collaboration (Non-Managerial)
Coordinate with other AHA department leaders to ensure consistent inter-discipline coordination (MEP/FP + technology).
Participate in firmwide leadership and operations rhythms as appropriate (standards alignment, lessons learned, technical forums).
Provide limited, as-needed technical consultation across AHA offices to help resolve complex electrical system issues and support troubleshooting/diagnosis, consistent with workload priorities and leadership direction.
Professional Responsibility
Stay current with relevant electrical/building codes and standards; research and resolve non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations, when required. Brief internal teams and clients on findings and recommended compliance paths where applicable to specific projects.
Continuing education is strongly encouraged, including active participation in professional associations, technical forums, and ongoing code/industry training
What Success Looks Likes (First 6-12 months)
Strengthened QA/QC gates and measurable reduction in preventable rework and coordination-driven RFIs.
Improved forecasting and staffing alignment to GA backlog; reduced delivery pinch-points.
Defined training plan implemented with clear skill progression for engineers/designers.
Positive feedback from PMs and clients on responsiveness, constructability, and delivery predictability.
Active contribution to priority pursuits and key account support in the Georgia market.
