Job Summary

Interested in working behind the scenes of an academic library? The Acquisitions Department is seeking a student employee to assist with processing incoming print materials, with a particular focus on serials (magazines) in a quiet office environment. This position provides hands-on experience with library workflows, collections, and catalog systems while supporting essential day-to-day operations.

To ensure accurate tracking of work hours, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their University of Utah employment to the Libraries, unless an exception is approved.

Responsibilities

Process incoming print materials, including magazines (serials), and books

Apply barcodes, security strips, and other physical processing elements to library materials

Update records in the library catalog and assist with serials maintenance

Use Excel spreadsheets to look up and track materials

Assist with weeding and withdrawing materials as needed

Maintain and update library catalog items and internal tracking lists (e.g., title lists and incoming books)

Provide backup support for department staff and assist with one-time or short-term projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a current University of Utah student

Enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during fall and spring semesters

Basic computer skills required; familiarity with Excel or spreadsheets is a plus

Preferences

Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately with physical materials and data

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Willingness to learn new systems, procedures, and technologies

Good English reading comprehension and written communication skills

Dependable, organized, and able to follow established workflows
