Job Overview

As a Technician Trainee for the Logan County Engineer's Office, you will contribute to the safety and efficiency of our roadways, bridges, and ditches. This is an entry-level position where you will learn skilled trades---from equipment operation to construction---supporting county maintenance and repair projects.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Assist with road maintenance such as paving, patching, sealing, and raking asphalt; install/repair guardrails, culverts, and drainage structures.

Cut, trim, and chip trees/brush; mow grass and maintain rights-of-way.

Direct traffic using flags/paddles and perform pre-trip equipment inspections.

Perform basic labor duties as required.

Prepare and submit legible, accurate and timely work-related records.

Learn to operate dump trucks with snowplows, skid steers, backhoes, chippers, and various power tools.

Serve as "On-Call" personnel for weather emergencies (snow/ice) or other roadway hazards.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Must be 18+ with a High School Diploma or GED.

Valid Ohio Driver's License.

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 6 months of hire.

Must live within a 36-minute commute of our Bellefontaine office and be available to work irregular hours (nights/weekends) during weather emergencies.

Must be able to lift 50--100 lbs. and work on uneven terrain.

Must pass a background check, drug screen, and license verification.

Must be fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the performance of duties in diverse environmental and physical conditions. Candidates must possess the ability to adapt to and perform effectively in the following:

Environmental Conditions:

Variable Weather: Exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold) and inclement weather conditions.

Exposure to Elements: Potential exposure to gas fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, insects, poison ivy, and pollen.

Noise and Vibration: Regular exposure to loud noise and vibration.

Physical Demands:

Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving of heavy objects, with occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.

Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and sitting.

Demonstrated manual dexterity and coordination for operating equipment.

Full neck mobility for the safe operation of dump trucks and heavy equipment.

Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel, grip, grab, hold, or carry.

Ability to walk and stand on both flat and uneven terrain.

Ability to reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level.

Ability to work at extended heights, in precarious places, and on scaffolding.

Safety Considerations:

Exposure to hazardous environments, including noise, dust, dirt, grease, vibrations, and potential exposure to chemicals.

Risk of injury from moving equipment, traffic, and slippery surfaces.

Potential for eye strain during snow plowing operations.

Risk of electrical shock.

Sensory Requirements:

Normal vision, including color and depth perception is required for safe equipment operation and situational awareness.

Adequate hearing is essential for safe operation of equipment and awareness of surrounding traffic.
