Position Purpose
The Athletic Trainer position provides athletic training services for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Athletic Department. The Athletic Trainer is the health care coordinator for student-athletes and assists in the management of student-athlete health and well-being by providing coverage within the athletic training facility, at practices, and at home and away events. This position works directly with student-athletes to assess conditions and be the liaison for referral to proper medical personnel for continuing care as needed. The incumbent will work cooperatively with staff, coaches, department personnel, and assist other staff athletic trainers in the management of all athletic team medical coverage. The incumbent will also act as a preceptor for graduate students enrolled in the Master of Science Athletic Training (MSAT) program as assigned by the athletic training faculty. The Athletic Trainer maintains up to date knowledge of and complies with the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer practice standards and code of professional responsibility.

Responsibilities
Provide athletic training coverage to Minnesota State University Moorhead sport programs/events. Provide care to student-athletes as permitted under the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice Athletic Trainer license. Athletic Trainers will have primary assignments with specific programs/events but must be able to cover any Minnesota State University Moorhead programs/events. Work autonomously to provide athletic training coverage of intercollegiate student-athletes during general athletic training facility hours, practices, and home and away events. Utilize knowledge and expertise to design, communicate and implement injury prevention programs and provide guidance on team nutrition, mental health, sleep, and other areas of well-being to optimize the student-athlete's health. Develop plans with stakeholders and utilize knowledge in monitoring potentially hazardous environmental conditions. Ensure successful communication with Athletic Trainer colleagues and the Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Training occurs to ensure adequate coverage, continuity of student-athlete care and opportunities for continuous improvement are recognized and responded to within Athletic Training.
Provide physical evaluation and treatment of student-athletes. Provide standard and immediate care procedures in emergency situations, independent of setting. Demonstrate autonomy to make lifesaving techniques, standard emergency procedures, and deciding whether further medical attention is necessary. Utilize expert knowledge in the domains of athletic training as defined by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) BOC regarding injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion, examination, assessment, and diagnosis; therapeutic intervention; healthcare administration and professional responsibility. Design and implement specific treatment plans for each student-athlete dependent on their various needs. Recognize and refer to other healthcare professionals when warranted to optimize student-athletes care. Communicate daily with appropriate medical professionals (including orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants, chiropractors, and general health care providers) within their specialty areas for the advancement of treatments.
Maintain medical records/documentation. Maintain proper medical documentation daily using athletic training forms which meet nationally recognized standards. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and adhere to the standards set by NATA By-Laws; Code of Ethics and Position Statements; National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Policies and Recommendations; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Guidelines; and HIPAA regulations. These standards are set by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice which regulates the practice of athletic training in the State of Minnesota and complies with the Minnesota Athletic Training Licensing process. This position will collaborate in the development, reassessment, and the implementation of policies and procedures pertaining to the delivery of healthcare services and the management of the athletic training facility.
Serve as Student Preceptor. Utilize specialized skills and knowledge to provide direct clinical supervision, instruction, and evaluation for each graduate athletic training student assigned. Develop and coordinate schedules with the graduate athletic training students to ensure an adequate clinical rotation. Provide constructive criticism and feedback at appropriate times. Attend meetings with the Athletic Training Program faculty quarterly or as needed to address the graduate athletic training students or the MSAT program.
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the Athletic Department and maintain the reputation of Minnesota State University Moorhead including, but not limited to, that are sponsored by the Minnesota State University Moorhead Athletics Department; professional development and continuing education activities as appropriate to maintain state and national certification; and duties as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Training Services.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited program (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education), Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or other related degree program.
Two (2) years of professional experience as a certified Athletic Trainer providing athletic training services in a clinic, high school, or university setting.
Certified by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainer (BOC).
Current Minnesota Athletic Trainer licensure or eligibility to attain upon hire.
Current CPR and AED certifications required.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced knowledge and skills in pathology of injuries and illnesses as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Advanced skills in orthopedic clinical examination and diagnosis as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Advanced knowledge and skills in acute care of injury and illness as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Advanced knowledge and skills in pharmacology as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Advanced knowledge and skills in therapeutic modalities as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Advanced knowledge and skills in conditioning and rehabilitation exercise as required by the BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer
Other Requirements
Nights, weekends, holidays, and national travel is required.
Must be able to load, unload, carry and set up materials at various venues.
May have to walk long distances and run in an emergency or time sensitive situation.
