About the Work Unit
The Intelligent Transportation Systems Field Operations Unit exists to install, operate, maintain and repair complex communication and ITS systems for CDOT Statewide. The Intelligent Transportation Systems Office exists to manage CDOT's ITS program, to operate the Colorado Traffic Management Center, to plan for CDOT ITS activities and support contracts, to manage ITS research program. The unit performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance on various @types of electronics, electro-mechanical and communications equipment. The unit also performs maintenance and repair on electrical systems associated with ITS. This position will work with both Statewide and Region Traffic and ITS Teams.
The Unit performs maintenance on communication systems associated with traffic signals, tunnel control systems, PLCs, and ITS assets across the State, while supporting remote hands for the ITS Network Operations Center (NOC) at Data Center and Node Sites across the State.
About the Position
The Electronics Specialist position will be inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and documenting fiber-optic and ITS assets. This position will work closely with other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) units and Region Teams and will provide support to others in the Region in the installation, maintenance and repair of Fiber, Broadband, Cellular equipment and other communication systems. This position will also perform technical installation, troubleshooting and repair of electronic, electro-mechanical systems and communication equipment. The Electronics Specialist will operates special test equipment and maintains tools and materials needed as a technical expert. This position will maintain and troubleshoot several different assets from intelligent transportation devices to control tunnel systems, cameras, variable message boards, weather systems, data collection devices, and other intelligent technologies on the highway. This position will work with both Statewide and Region Traffic and ITS Teams.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Understands and tests different pieces of equipment by power cycling or repairing damages;
Performs all duties associated with maintenance of components of the ITS asset ranging from wiping dirty camera lenses, to testing fiber laterals to find damages;
Implement proper traffic control practices to access assets needing maintenance and repair;
Maintain scheduled power cycling of devices or calibrating sidefire radars or cleaning out pull boxes of sand, water or debris;
Work on devices such as weather station sensors, cameras, variable message boards, variable speed limit board, sidefire radars, automatic traffic records, etc. as well as repairing or troubleshooting fiber connections and switches including backbone and lateral paths through pull boxes and manholes;
Trace and review power infrastructure like pedestals, meters and transforms to trace lines going to the asset to troubleshoot and identify any issues with power, escalating to ITS electricians as needed;
Test and splice fiber where necessary under direction of supervisor and/or work lead;
Troubleshoot and repair electronic, electro-mechanical and communication devices to resolve operational equipment issues using appropriate test equipment, hand and power tools (this includes locating power/communication lines to determine status and condition);
Operates utility locating equipment and works around and near live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines;
Perform installation, modification and/or testing of new ITS electronics, electro-mechanical, fiber optic and or communication equipment or systems, this includes testing and acceptance of contractor installed systems or equipment;
Perform reviews and field visits for completed project work before new assets are accepted as ITS assets, including providing punch lists to contractors via coordination with project managers/engineers and re-reviewing the completion of punch list activities to ensure proper completion;
Maintains communication systems (modems, radios, switches, etc.), regeneration structures (Node), and network gear, in addition to devices along the roadside;
Plan, schedule and implement Traffic Control plans for maintenance activities scheduled at road-side locations;
Maintain vehicles and tools required to perform job duties, including pre- and post trip inspections, typical vehicle maintenance and regular washing of equipment; calibrate and maintain tools;
Provide written and or electronic documentation as requested to include time sheets, work orders, procurement documents, test results, leave request, pre and post trip logs, site acceptance forms, data collection information, safety discussions or changes and updates to existing documents;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Primarily 6:00 am - 4:30 pm work hours, Monday-Thursday
Overnight travel within the state boundaries as well as to attend the meetings and trainings
On occasion, may be required to work swing and/or night shifts
On-call-responsible for work on ITS regulatory signs & signals
Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Experience Only
at least two (2) years of technical experience in repairing, performing maintenance, installing, or modifying, electronic, electro-mechanical or communication equipment and devices
Equipment and devices should primarily be in one or more of the following areas: wireless, microwave, hard-wired systems, fiber optics telecommunication electronics, close circuit and detection video cameras, radios, programmable controllers, modems, switching equipment/devices, and/or Intelligent Transportation Systems. Experience must have included work with computers and information technology.
Education and Experience:
A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 2 years.
Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, communication technology, information technology or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.
Experience in repairing, performing maintenance, installing, or modifying, electronic, electro-mechanical or communication equipment and devices.
