Join the City of Stockton as an Associate Civil Engineer!
The City of Stockton's Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and skilled professional to join our team as an Associate Civil Engineer. In this role, you'll take on a variety of exciting and meaningful projects that directly impact the community-from reviewing development plans and designing public works projects to inspecting construction and improving traffic systems.
Depending on assignment, you may also provide direction to technical and professional staff, contributing to projects such as:
Designing and managing capital improvement projects involving streets, utilities, traffic systems, bridges, buildings and more
Performing surveying and field/office engineering work
Preparing or overseeing detailed engineering plans, specifications and estimates
Manage consultant contract compliance and work quality
Designing, installing, and analyzing traffic control and planning programs
This position offers the chance to apply your expertise in civil, traffic, or engineering while making a difference for residents, businesses, and visitors in Stockton.
Work Schedule:
Enjoy a 9/80 schedule, with flexible work hours. Typical hours would be Monday-Thursday (7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) and Friday (7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.), plus every other Friday off! Start and ending time can be changed with supervisor approval.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a deep class in which incumbents may be assigned to any level, provided that they possess the required education, license and experience, and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. In addition, incumbents may be assigned to a comparable level in the Project Manager series, Public Works Inspector class, or Survey Supervisor class, provided that they possess the required education, license, and experience and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. This class is distinguished from the Senior Civil Engineer in that the latter has overall responsibility for a section of the Engineering Division.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Associate Civil Engineer : Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a closely related field and two (2) years of engineering experience in design, development review, construction or traffic engineering work at a level equivalent to the City's Assistant Engineer or Assistant Civil Engineer class. Must also possess a valid California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer.
OR
Possession of a valid California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer and eight (8) years experience in design, development review, construction or traffic engineering work, two (2) years of which shall have been at a level equivalent to the City's Assistant Engineer or Assistant Civil Engineer class. Possession of an Associate of Arts degree or completion of sixty semester hours or equivalent quarter hours from an accredited college or university with major course work in a pre-engineering or closely related curriculum may be substituted for two years of the experience.
Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid California driver's license.
Specified positions may require a willingness to work out of doors in all weather conditions and physical strength to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written and/or practical examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
