The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State seeks a Communications Specialist 1 to create and produce various communication materials and to perform public speaking to provide education and awareness. The main duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Creating, editing, and modifying various forms of communication including handbooks, brochures, written program materials, videos, and training curriculums to ensure a solid final product
Planning, coordinating and performing outreach to third party stakeholders, including public speaking.
Implementing and modifying an ongoing statewide outreach plan.
Identifying and pursuing opportunities for general outreach.
Scheduling, coordinating, and managing outreach and training presentations and related activities.
Facilitating and/or co-facilitating in-person and online trainings.
Telephone communications with the public
Minimum Qualifications
At least two years of experience performing communications work that included creating written materials; a four-year college degree may substitute one year of experience
Experience utilizing English (speaking, writing, and reading) to: (1) communicate effectively to staff, external customers, and public audiences; (2) prepare written directions and responses; (3) comprehend complex written text
Ability to creatively produce electronic documents, audio and video products and other communications for a variety of mediums and audiences
Excellent organizational skills sufficient to plan and administer daily office activities and long-term projects
Excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to conduct business with people from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to equality and inclusion
Computer skills sufficient to create documents, desktop publishing, perform website maintenance
Class D driver's license and access to a reliable automobile
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Visual Communications Technology, or other closely related field
Experience with or knowledge of victim services programs
Experience creating visual and audio communications using a variety of methods
Experience with oral communication, with the ability to publicly speak
Experience with one or more of these computer software programs: InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Suites, Microsoft Office Suite, and Illustrator
Experience with or training in state and federal electronic accessibility requirements
Experience creating electronic documents, audio products, or video products that are accessible to those with disabilities
Experience creating written communications for people with a variety of impairments and special needs
Experience with or knowledge of public affairs/state government practices and processes
Experience with or knowledge of address confidentiality programs
Professional experience maintaining confidential or private data according to state law
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and transport up to 70 pounds using a cart or a similar device
Ability to climb, bend, reach, carry, and push/pull and sit or stand continuously for long periods of time and perform repetitive motions
